Note: Before you install Windows NT using this installation software, you should verify whether the AlphaBIOS firmware in your system is up to date. Please see web site http://www.windowsnt.digital.com/support/driver.asp for details.

Note: If your system has a DIGITAL KZPSA disk controller, you will need software driver (deckzpsx.sys) V1.51 or newer to run with the HAL rev E in this installation software. A copy of that driver is included in this kit.

If your system has an IDE CDROM, you must use the atapi.sys software driver that is also included in this kit.

This kit was designed for use during a fresh install of Windows NT V4.0, or during an upgrade from Windows NT 3.51 to Windows NT 4.0. If you want to updating the HAL on an existing Windows NT 4.0 installation, please obtain the Update Kit from web site http://www.windowsnt.digital.com/support/driver.asp.

o To install this HAL during a fresh install of Windows NT 4.00, or during
an upgrade from Windows NT 3.51 to Windows NT 4.00.

   1. Unzip this HAL kit to a freshly formatted diskette.
Label this disk "Alpha NT 4.0 Hardware Support Diskette."

   2. During the Windows NT installation/upgrade you are prompted for your
system name. Select "Other" and press Enter.

   3. When prompted for a hardware support diskette, put the disk you just
prepared in your diskette drive, and press Enter.

   4. Select the correct system type. (Use the up and down arrows on your
       keyboard to scroll the entries.)

   5. When NT 4.0 installation list the mass storage devices add in the
ATAPI (IDE Driver) and the KZPSA driver as needed.

       a. To do this, type 'S' to specify additional mass storage
           devices.

       b. Then select "Other" from the list of available drivers and
           press "Enter".

       c. The computer will then look on the inserted floppy for the
           list of drivers.

       d. From this list, select the needed mass storage device driver.

       e. Repeat this step if both drivers are needed.

   6. Proceed with the rest of the Windows NT installation/upgrade as usual.
The floppy will need to remain in the computer until NT installation is
finished copying the system files to the hard drive.

The HAL files in this kit are Compaq OEM HAL revision E for Windows NT V4.0. Newer HAL kits, when available, will be posted to our website at http://www.compaq.com/support/files/alphant/index.html.

Features of HAL revision E are discussed in the Release Notes, which are included in this kit as file RelNotes.rtf. The Serviceability Enhancements that are discussed in the Release Notes are not part of this installation kit; they are a part of the HAL Revision E Update Kit available at http://www.compaq.com/support/files/alphant/index.html.
