Installation Preparation

The first step in installing Windows NT for AXP from this kit is to
install new Windows NT firmware into your machine. This new firmware
must be installed prior to installing the new version of Windows NT or
Windows NT Advanced Server, Version 3.5, code-named "Daytona".

To install the new Windows NT AXP firmware do the following:

1. If you intend to do a fresh installation of the Daytona Beta (as
opposed to upgrading your current Windows NT 3.1 system), skip to step
#2.

After you install the new Windows NT Firmware, you will initially be
unable to boot the released versions of Windows NT for AXP kits. This
is because some information is lost during the upgrade and it must be
restored after the upgrade is complete. Do this *before* upgrading the
firmware on a machine that already has Windows NT 3.1 installed if you
will be booting Windows NT 3.1:

	A. Power-up the AXP PC and wait until the Windows NT firmware
Boot menu is displayed. This is the screen that has the
top line, "ARC Multiboot DEC Version #.##", where #.## is a
	   number such as 2.06.

	B. Move the write-protect tab of the firmware upgrade floppy
to the "writable" position, and then place it in the
	   floppy drive.

	C. Select "Run a program" and press Enter.

	D. Enter "a:\saveenv" and press Enter. If you get a "Pathname
is not defined" error message, enter
	   "eisa()disk()fdisk()saveenv" and press Enter.

	E. Saveenv will ask you if you want to continue. Type a "Y".

If saveenv tells you that you have a version mismatch,
ignore the warning and tell it to continue.

	F. After it successfully saves your environment variables
and boot selections to the floppy, it will announce:

Environment successfully saved! To restore them,
		run the Restenv program.

If you get any other message, please contact your Digital
	   service representative.

Press any key to return to the firmware boot menu.

2. Power-up the AXP PC and display the Windows NT firmware boot menu.
This is the screen that has the top line, "ARC Multiboot DEC Version
#.##", where #.## is a number such as 2.06.

(If the system presents you with a chevron prompt (>>>) after the POST
tests have run, type this command: >>> SET OS NT, press Enter, and
power-cycle the system.)

3. Insert the firmware upgrade floppy into the AXP PC floppy drive.

4. Select "Supplementary menu..." and press Enter.

5. Select "Install new firmware" and press Enter.

6. The firmware installation tool asks you to enter "Y" to continue
with the update. Press "Y" in response.

7. Choices for the location of the firmware update image are displayed:

		Floppy #0\jensfw.bin
		CD-ROM\jensfw.bin
		Other location
		Exit

8. Select "Floppy #0\jensfw.bin" and press Enter.

9. Before starting the update procedure, you will be asked twice
whether to continue the installation. Press "Y" each time to proceed
with the update. If the update is not successful, you will be asked
whether to continue trying. Please answer with a "Y" as many times as
is necessary.

After the update completes, power-cycle the AXP PC (power it off, then
back on). Do not be concerned if the EISA bus has configuration
errors, or if this message is displayed:

WARNING: The firmware has found that some information
in the NVRAM of your machine is inconsistent.
	The problem areas are:

[ list of problem areas ]

If a problem is labeled as "must be fixed", you must
correct it before Windows NT can be booted or installed.
A problem without this label might not affect Windows NT,
but you should fix it at some point anyway.

Select "Set up the system" from the Supplementary menu to
	correct these problems.

	Please wait...

The monitor eventually displays the Windows NT Firmware boot menu.

10. If you did not do step #1, then skip to step #11. If you followed
the instructions in step #1, this is now the time to restore your boot
selections. Do this:

	A. Select "Run a program" and press Enter.

	B. Enter "eisa()disk()fdisk()restenv" and press Enter.

	C. Restenv will ask you if you want to continue. Type a "Y".

	D. After it successfully restores your environment variables
and boot selections to the floppy, it will announce:

The environment variables have been restored.
Power-cycle the machine after you return to the firmware.

If you get any other message, please contact your Digital
	   service representative.

Press any key to return to the firmware boot menu, and then
power-cycle the machine. *After* you power-cycle the
	   machine, proceed to step #11.

11. Now set up your Windows NT firmware information by doing the
following:

	A. Select "Supplementary menu..." and press Enter.

	B. Select "Set up the System..." and press Enter.

	C. The Setup menu is displayed. The parts of your system
that need initializing are highlighted in yellow and have an
arrow (->) . The remaining instructions for Step 11 explain
	how to do this.

	D. If the system time in the upper right corner of the
screen is incorrect, or if an arrow is beside Set system time,
select "Set system time" and press Enter. Then enter the
	correct date and time.

	E. If an arrow is beside Set default environment variables,
select "Set default environment variables" and press
Enter. The following steps are based on the assumption that
you use the disk with SCSI ID zero, on the first SCSI bus in
your system, as your system disk. If this is not the case,
	adjust your selections accordingly.

		1. Select SCSI Hard Disk and press Enter.
		2. You are prompted to enter the SCSI bus number.
		Select 0 and press Enter.
		3. You are prompted to enter the SCSI ID. Select 0
		and press Enter.
		4. You are prompted to enter the partition number.
		Select 1 and press Enter.

	F. If an arrow is beside Set default configuration, select "Set
	default configuration" and press Enter.

		1. Select 3.5" 2.88MB and press Enter.
		2. You are prompted to answer whether there is a
second floppy. If you do not have a second floppy,
		select No and press Enter.
		3. You are prompted to enter which keyboard will be
used. Select one of the possible keyboard options that
is supported by your local version of Windows NT.

	G. At this point, the only Setup menu item marked with an
arrow should be Run EISA configuration utility from floppy.
(If other items are marked with an arrow, address them before
	continuing.)

	H. Insert the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) floppy into
the floppy drive. The ECU floppy is the one that you received
with your Windows NT Version 3.1 kit.

	I. Select Run EISA configuration utility from floppy and
press Enter. The firmware will save the system settings in the
NVRAM and then reboot the system so that it can automatically
	run the ECU.

12. Since you have not yet run the ECU, the firmware will find EISA
bus configuration errors. This is normal. In addition, a cautionary
message about a system board ID mismatch is sometimes displayed.
Press Enter to continue the configuration.

In most cases, the ECU does all of its work automatically, and you do
not have to manually configure EISA cards. Press Save and exit for
automatic configuration, or make changes and then press Save and exit.
Then select Save the configuration and restart the computer. After
running the ECU, the firmware reboots the machine.

You should not see any more EISA configuration error messages on your
boot screen. If you do, please contact your Digital representative.
