COMPAQ Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: DECtalk[TM] Software, Version 4.5.1 SPD 48.98.05 for DIGITAL UNIX DESCRIPTION DECtalk[TM] Software Version 4.5.1 for DIGITAL[TM] UNIX[R](now called Compaq Tru64[TM] UNIX) is a technology that includes an Application Programming Interface (API) based on Digital Equipment Corporation's industry-leading Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesizer. DECtalk Software Developer's Kit (SDK) provides application develop- ers with the object code and tools for converting standard ASCII text into highly intelligible and natural-sounding speech, playable through audio hardware on AlphaStation[TM] workstations and AlphaServer[TM] servers that utilize the DIGITAL UNIX operating system. While the SDK is provided in American English, once development is completed, the developer can choose to incorporate other languages into the final application. Available languages, in addition to American English, include: British English, German, Latin American Spanish, and Castilian Spanish. The API is an extension to Multimedia Services for DIGITAL UNIX and is similar to the multimedia interface provided in Microsoft[R] Windows NT[R] and Windows 95[R] operating systems. Features of DECtalk Software for UNIX include: o American English Text-To-Speech synthesis o British English Text-To-Speech synthesis o German Text-To-Speech synthesis o Castilian Spanish Text-To-Speech synthesis o Latin American Spanish Text-To-Speech synthesis April 1999 AE-RETXA-TE o MultiLanguage capability for changing languages "on-the-fly" o Nine defined voice personalities (four female, four male, and one child) o Year 2000 ready o Ability to say letters, words, or phrases o Pause, continue, and stop speaking control o Variable speaking rates from 75 words per minute to 600 words per minute o Accurate letter-to-sound (LTS) pronunciation rules o Large internal (fixed) dictionary o User-definable pronunciation dictionary o Punctuation control for pauses, pitch, and stress o Output stereo volume control o Ability to say proper names, dates, numbers, and many popular abbreviations o Ability to recognize same spelling, different pronunciation o Intelligent E-mail preprocessing capability o Ability to synthesize to a file o Ability to synthesize to memory o Ability to play WAVE audio files o Ability to generate DTMF tones for dialing o Ability to generate tones of a specified frequency and duration o Voice control commands may be inserted into any text file o Allows multiple instances of the Speech object on a single processor (for running more than one voice application at a time) 2 DECtalk Software Developer's Kit for UNIX includes: o The Digital Application Programming Interface (DAPI) that provides software developers with the tools, utilities, and documentation that gives them the ability to include DECtalk in their applica- tions/devices, with functions for all the features listed above. Documentation and sample code are provided. o An application called "Speak" that allows a user to synthesize a text file or text typed into a window. It provides control of voice and speaking rate, and its interface is consistent with the Motif windowing environment. o A Motif-windows-based user dictionary compiler called "windict" to create customized pronunciation dictionaries. o MultiLanguage capability o C language sample code is provided for the following applets: xmsay - a Motif applet that allows a user to synthesize a text file to speech say - a command line applet that allows a user to synthesize a text file to speech dtmemory - returns synthesized speech in in-memory buffers and writes it to a file aclock - speaks clock time at set intervals CONFORMANCE TO STANDARDS DECtalk Software for UNIX is designed to conform to the following standard: o MIT X Window System[TM] Version 11 Release (X11R5) 3 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS Processors Supported Any AlphaStation workstation or AlphaServer server that includes a supported sound card Disk Space Requirements o Disk space required for installation: 20 Mbytes, includes all soft- ware subsets (on-line documentation, and development and runtime libraries) o Disk space required for use (permanent): 20 Mbytes, includes all software subsets These counts refer to the disk space required on the system disk. The sizes are approximate; actual sizes may vary depending on the user's system environment, configuration, and software options. Memory Requirements The minimum memory supported for audio applications using Multimedia Services for DIGITAL UNIX and DECtalk Software is 64 Mbytes. The performance and memory usage of multimedia applications are par- ticularly sensitive to system configuration. More memory may be re- quired on a system with several applications running, or where it may be desirable to improve the performance of an application. The use of this software in conjunction with increased memory capacity improves performance for many applications. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Supported Environment: o DIGITAL UNIX Operating System, Version 3.2 or 4.0C o Multimedia Services for DIGITAL UNIX, Version 2.0 4 Programming Language: C or C++ Programming Language is required. GROWTH CONSIDERATIONS While upgradability and compatibility are key considerations in future product development, the minimum hardware/software requirements for any future version of this product may be different from the requirements for the current version.
