Compaq Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: Compaq Tape Interchange System for SPD 61.14.04 Windows NT on Alpha and Intel, Version 3.2 DESCRIPTION The Compaq Tape Interchange System for Windows NT, Version 3.2, is a magnetic tape interchange service for Compaq Alpha and Compaq Intel based PC systems running Windows NT supporting a limited number of tape drive technologies. A magnetic tape interchange service permits specific magnetic tapes written by one system to be read by other systems. In the present case, for example, the Compaq Tape Interchange System for Windows NT, Ver- sion 3.2, permits tapes written by a non-Alpha system, such as an IBM mainframe system, to be read by an Alpha Windows NT system and, con- versely, permits tapes written by an Alpha Windows NT system to be read by an IBM mainframe system. Version 3.2 of the DIGITAL Tape Interchange System for Windows NT will permit a user to: o Read and write labeled (such as VMS Copy tapes) and unlabeled (such as UNIX dd tapes) ANSI- and IBM-standard, ASCII and EBCDIC fixed length tape records. o Read and write IBM labeled and unlabeled and ANSI labeled and un- labeled variable length tape records. o View the contents of a magnetic tape prior to processing. o Report the operational status and other characteristics of specifi Compaq magnetic tape drives prior to and during operation. July 1999 AE-QQNVE-TE o Test specific tape drives prior to operation. o Perform auto sequencing to allow unattended tape operations. o Manually set up batch queues through the Graphical User Interface. o Undertake tape-to-tape copy. o Select the tape block size so as to maximize tape performance. o Read and write custom and/or non-standard tapes. o Convert the contents of one supported magnetic tape format to an- other supported format. o Convert EBCDIC data to ASCII data and ASCII data to EBCDIC data. o Stop and restart interchange operations. o Utilize software control mechanisms ("robotics") for those supported devices that incorpoarate this feature. o Allow the user to perform simultaneous functions on up to three sup- ported devices. o Allow a user to utilize customized translation tables. Version 3.2 of the system will not permit a user to: o Read VMS tapes written using VMS Backup. o Backup multiple directories to magnetic tape. o Dump system memory to magnetic tape. The Compaq Tape Interchange System is comprised of: o A Graphical User Interface that permits users to exercise the full complement of interchange capabilities. o A layered software device driver supporting specific Compaq mag- netic tape drives for Windows NT. o A maximum of three (3) of the supported Compaq magnetic tape drives (must be purchased separately). 2 The Compaq Tape Interchange System kit consists of: o Windows NT device driver for specific Compaq magnetic tape drives. o A Graphic User Interface application. The interchange system is supported by a combined Installation and Users Guide for Compaq Tape Interchange System for Windows NT that explains how to install the system and take advantage of its features.
