Your Digital LN17ps printer driver has been set up to provide the best
compatibility for mixed environments. However, some performance
trade-offs have been made in doing so. To optimize printing
performance, you can try these things:

1.) Set the output protocol to binary or tagged-binary.

The driver has been set to send ASCII characters by default.
This insures that the printer will be able to receive all of
its data over a 7-bit communications channel. If your
configuration allows for 8-bit communications, then use this
            mode for higher throughput.

            From Windows 95:

                * Open the "Printers" folder from "My Computer".

                * Right-Click on the LN17 PostScript printer icon and
select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

                * Select the "PostScript" tab and then the "Advanced"
                  button.

                * In the box labeled "Data Format" there are three
available choices of which "ASCII" is the default.
Select "Pure Binary" if you are using a parallel
cable or some other true 8-bit transmission mechanism.
Select TBCP (Tagged Binary Communications Protocol) if
you are using DCPS (VMS DECPrint Supervisor) or some
other non-standard print job handler. If your job does
print correctly, you may have to revert back to ASCII
                  data protocol.

            From Windows 3.1:

                * From your Main group, open the Control Panel, and
                  double-click on the "Printers" icon.

                * Select the LN17 printer and then push the "Setup" button.

                * Select the "PostScript" tab and then click on "Send Binary"
from the "Performance Options" box. If your job causes errors
on the printout, then you will have to revert back to
                  ASCII data protocol.

        2.) Don't send color information.

In the Windows 3.1 (AdobePS 3.01) driver, there is a "Send
full color data" button under the PostScript tab of the
driver setup. Un-check this for better performance. There
is no such control in the Windows 95 driver. (See 1 above for
information on how to get to these controls.)

3.) Send the PostScript header to the printer only once.

PostScript setup information is sent to the printer with each
print job. Since this code is the same for every print job, and
can be saved within the printer's memory, you can increase your
performance by not having to send this code for every job.

            From Windows 95:

                * Select the PostScript tab from the printer's property
sheet. (See 1 above for information on how to get to
                  these controls.)

                * In the "PostScript header" box, push the "Send Header
now" button and then select the "Assume header is
                  downloaded and retained" button.

            From Windows 3.1

                * Choose the "Job Controls" tab from the printer setup
button. (See 1 above for information on how to get to
                  these controls.)

                * Push the "Download" button in the "PostScript header"
box, and then select the "Already downloaded" button.
