Printer system software (firmware) is available to help you recover your
network laser printer in the event of a problem with the printer hard
disk or a later firmware upgrade. By loading this software into your
printer, you can return the printer to a known state.

This package contains the following files:

LN40P104.PS LN40 printer system software, V1.0.4, in PostScript format
LN40P104.DL LN40 printer system software, V1.0.4, in DL format

Use one of the following procedures for loading the printer system and
network firmware into your DIGITAL Laser Printer LN40 from a Windows or
UNIX system:

Downloading via FTP using PostScript format:

This method is recommended if you can establish an FTP connection to the
  printer.

  1) Use an FTP application to connect to your printer, using the TCP/IP
address selected at the front panel of the printer.
  2) Copy a file to the printer using FTP in binary mode. For example,
from a Microsoft Windows MS-DOS Command Prompt, with D: as the CD-ROM
drive on your Windows system, you would issue the following commands
to download the network interface firmware:

FTP> open X.X.X.X (where X.X.X.X is TCP/IP address of printer)
       FTP> binary
       FTP> put D:\FIRMWARE\LN40P104.PS
       FTP> quit

Downloading via FTP using DL format:

The firmware cannot be upgraded by downloading the DL format of a file
over an ftp connection. See instructions below for downloading a DL format
  file using the parallel port.

Downloading via parallel port using PostScript format:

Use this method if the printer boots successfully but you cannot establish
  an FTP connection to it.

  1) Connect your system to the printer using a parallel cable.
  2) Copy the files, in binary mode, to the parallel port on the printer.
For example, from a Microsoft Windows MS-DOS Command Prompt, with LPT1:
as the parallel port on your Windows system and D: as the CD-ROM drive,
you would issue the following commands:

       C:\> COPY/B D:\FIRMWARE\LN40P104.PS LPT1:

Downloading via parallel port using DL format:

Use this method if the printer does not boot successfully.

  1) Connect your system to the printer using a parallel cable.
  2) Boot the printer while holding the printer's Offline button and any
other button on the printer's front panel.

The following appears on the printer panel:

	UPDATE SYSTEM DISK OR
	FORMAT SYSTEM DISK UPDATE FORMAT

  3) Press the button below the "UPDATE" choice.
  4) Copy the binary file to the printer's parallel port.
For example, from a Microsoft Windows MS-DOS Command Prompt, with LPT1:
as the parallel port on your Windows system and D: as the CD-ROM drive,
you would issue the following commands:

       C:\> COPY/B D:\FIRMWARE\LN40P104.DL LPT1:

The printer reboots automatically after successfully downloading each
firmware file, regardless of which download method you used. The printer
startup page shows the printer firmware version designations. For the
files in this package, the startup page should show Release 1.0, Level 4.
