This document provides last-minute information about Compaq Remote
Control Software (RCS) Version 1.0. This information includes known
limitations of the product. The following topics are covered in this
document:

o SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
o ADDITIONAL WINDOWS NT REQUIREMENTS
o SOFTWARE LICENSE KEY
o INSTALLATION OPTIONS
o PROBLEMS WITH DISCOVERY VIA PING
o TCP/IP ADDRESS NOT SHOWN WHEN DEVICE BECOMES UNAVAILABLE

-----

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

You can install Compaq RCS if your PC meets the following requirements:

o Operating System: Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 (Service
Pack 3 required, X86 platforms only)

o Protocols and Services: TCP/IP protocol required. Microsoft SNMP
  agent recommended.

o Disk space: 16MB required. An additional 16MB is required during the
  installation process.

-----

ADDITIONAL WINDOWS NT REQUIREMENTS

To install Compaq RCS on a Windows NT system, you must be logged in as
the Administrator for the workstation you are installing the program
on or be logged into an account that has Administrator priviliges on
the workstation you are installing the program on. Compaq RCS will
not work correctly if you install the program from non-privileged
account on your Windows NT system.

-----

SOFTWARE LICENSE KEY

During installation you will be prompted for the software license
key. This license key is located on the back side of the Compaq
RCS CD-ROM jewel case.

If you do not provide a software license key, RCS will be installed
for a 30 day demonstration period. At the end of that period, the
software will no longer operate and you must provide a license key
to continue to use the program.

If you have downloaded Compaq RCS from the Compaq web site, you
need to register your copy of the program to obtain a key by
electronic mail. The registration form is located on the Compaq
RCS web site that you downloaded this software from.

-----

INSTALLATION OPTIONS

Because of a limitation in the installer, you cannot choose to not
install the sound files that come with Compaq RCS. However, the
program will be installed with the "Use Sounds" option turned off.
This is a known limitation of Compaq RCS and will be fixed in a
future release.

PROBLEMS WITH DISCOVERY VIA PING

Compaq RCS uses the TCP/IP ping command to locate printers and
other devices on your network. If you are not discovering some
device known to be on your network there may be four reasons.

1) If an "unknown" icon appears instead of a printer icon, then
the device may not support the SNMP Printer MIB or the
SNMP settings in the printer may not be set up properly.
Compaq RCS requires that SNMP be enabled and the "public"
community name be present with at least read access in
   devices that it manages.

2) The device may not have its TCP/IP settings properly set up
for your network or enabled. Compaq RCS requires TCP/IP to
be enabled in devices that it manages.

3) Compaq RCS may be sending more ping requests than the system
you installed the program on can handle. You can verify this
by checking the Search Returns Window by selecting it from
the Compaq RCS Discovery menu or the toolbar. To adjust the
speed at which Compaq RCS discovers devices, change the
Ping Release Rate on the Configuration Page. To open the
Configuration Page, select Options... from the Compaq RCS
   Tools menu.

4) You are attempting to discover devices beyond a firewall or
bridge that does not pass TCP/IP ping commands. In this case,
you can use the New Agent command and supply a TCP/IP address
to manage the device with Compaq RCS.

-----

TCP/IP ADDRESS NOT SHOWN WHEN DEVICE BECOMES UNAVAILABLE

In some cases, when a printer becomes unreachable or unavailable
(due to a hardware failure or other problem), the TCP/IP address
of the device can no longer be obtained from the printer and
will not appear in the device property pages. This is a known
limitation of Compaq RCS and will be corrected in a future release.

To work around this problem, you can select the Configure Machine
Display page by selecting Options... from the Compaq RCS Tools menu,
then selecting Configure Machine Display. At the bottom of this
page is a checkbox that reads "View IP addresses instead of machine
names for the icon title." When you check this box, the names of
the icons on the RCS map screen will change to the IP addresses
of the devices.
