Stay up on what's really happening in the wide ranging world of
UNIX in its many flavors and forms and in the many areas of re-
lated advanced computing technology, tools, programming
languages, and communications. Join your professional colleagues
at refereed and invited presentations, in expert-led tutorials,

gatherings.

At USENIX in Cincinnati, systems researchers and developers, sys-
tems managers and network administrators, programmers and appli-

tors and their students will gather to explore questions of im-
mediate importance to advanced computing systems innovation and
management. Professionals from within the open systems communi-

VENDOR DISPLAYS

The USENIX Vendor Display will provide a relaxed environment-not
the frenzy of an Exhibit Hall-in which the emphasis is on pro-
ducts and services, not flash. Here conference attendees can
"kick the tires" and be sure what's on display really does what
it's said to do. You can get real answers from technically savvy
vendor representatives so you'll know how something will work
with what you've already got.

Vendors: this is an exceptional opportunity for receiving feed-
back on new development from USENIX's technically astute confer-
ence attendees. If your company would like to display its pro-
ducts and services, please contact: Cynthia Deno +1 (408) 335-
9445, FAX: +1 (408) 335-2163, E-mail: cynthia@usenix.org

USENIX SUMMER 1993 RECEPTION

Always a special part of USENIX conferences. A time for fun,
food and friendly get-togethers. Don't miss the Reception on
Thursday, June 28 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Your invitation is in-
cluded in the conference technical sessions registration fee.

CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS

One copy of the Conference Proceedings, which contains all re-
fereed papers, and one copy of the Invited Talks Submitted Notes
may be picked up during the conference by all who registered for
the technical sessions. A copy of bound tutorial materials for
your session(s) is included in the tutorial program registration
fee.

BIRDS-OF A-FEATHER SESSIONS

Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BOFs) offer devotees of many varied
disciplines the opportunity to meet for announcements, discussion
and the sharing of strategies. Birds-of-a-Feather sessions will
be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings in the Hyatt
Hotel. You may schedule a BOF in advance by telephoning the
USENIX Conference Office at +1 (714) 588-8649 or via e-mail
conference@usenix.org. BOFs may also be scheduled on-site.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS REPORTS

Work In Progress (WIP) sessions are designed to introduce in-
teresting new or ongoing work. At this conference, we are par-
ticularly interested in promoting student research. Presenta-
tions should be short, pithy and fun! Reserve your WIP slot in
advance by sending e-mail to wips@usenix.org or by contacting Peg
Schafer at the conference.

THE GURU IS IN

Have a question that's been bothering you? Can't find the
answer? Try asking a USENIX guru! The Guru is IN will be offered
as one more way to transmit information. One of the major aims
of the USENIX Association is, in the words of Mike O'Dell, to get
information from "where it is to where it ain't." Noted experts
from the USENIX community will be available to answer questions,
each in their own area of expertise. The schedule, including the
names of the volunteer gurus and their areas of expertise, will
be posted at the conference. The Guru is IN is being coordinated
by Ed Gould Ged@pa.dec.com of Digital Equipment Corporation.

OPENING RECEPTION

The Opening Reception, Sunday January 24, 6:00 pm-8:00 pm, in the
Conference Registration area offers you a chance to say hello
over soft drinks and snacks.

KICKOFF

The Kickoff introduces conference attendees to the events of the
week and to Cincinnati. Topics include the technical sessions,
invited talks, tutorials, Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, Works-
In-Progress sessions, the Guru is IN, hospitality suites, the
vendor display, terminal room, the conference reception, SIG-
DOTs, the conference contest, food and drink locations, hotel

MEETING FOR "SIGNIFICANT OTHERS"

If your friends and members of your family accompanied you to
Cincinnati, they may want to meet others who have time to see the
sights or wish to share childcare. As an experiment to facili-
tate folks meeting other folks, the USENIX lounge will be set
aside on Tuesday, June 22 at 10:00-11:00 am as the "significant
others" meeting place. The Opening Reception on Sunday evening
is also a place to meet with others.

**Special Note: USENIX Conference Meeting Space

Some conference attendees have asked how USENIX conference loca-
tions are chosen: The week-long USENIX conference places a heavy
demand on meeting space. To offset the cost of meeting space,
USENIX guarantees to a hotel (or hotels) a minimum number of
sleeping rooms rented by attendees. The hotels then provide meet-
ing space and other services at no direct cost to USENIX. Such
agreements are complicated and, because the number of facilities
in the U.S.A. which can accommodate a USENIX conference is limit-
ed, we typically sign contracts five (!) years in advance. These
contracts contain penalty clauses (which may exceed $50,000) if
the room guarantee is unmet. Moreover, groups that can't live up
to their contracts find in the future they have trouble renting
space. Nevertheless, We try to choose sites that offer less ex-
pensive room rates.

A consequence of these arrangements is how important it is that
when making your hotel reservation you state you are attending
the USENIX Conference and that you pay the USENIX rate. Thus we
get credit toward fulfilling our room guarantee. (If you use a
corporate discount rate, it will not count toward the USENIX com-
mitment.)
