Glossary

absolute pathname

A pathname that begins at the root directory; a pathname that always begins with a slash (/). For example, /usr/bin is an absolute pathname. Also called a full pathname. Contrast with relative pathname. See also pathname

ascending order

An order of sorting that starts with the lowest value of a key and proceeds to the highest value in accordance with the rules for comparing data items in the current locale. For time based sorts, this implies earliest or oldest first.

ASCII

American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A set of 8-bit binary numbers representing the alphabet, punctuation, numerals, and other special symbols used in text representation and communications protocol.

CDE

Common Desktop Environment. The graphical user interface running on the desktop. CDE is compatible with the X Window System.

CDE front panel

A centrally located window on the CDE desktop containing controls for accessing applications and utilities including workspaces. The Front Panel occupies all workspaces. See also CDE

descending order

An order of sorting that starts with the highest value of a key and proceeds to the lowest value in accordance with the rules for comparing data items in the current locale. For time based sorts, this implies latest or newest first.

event

Something that happens that may be of interest either to some part of a local or remote system or to a user.

event detail

A format that presents all event data items, including variables, in a fixed manner. This format is used for in-depth analysis of an event.

event filter

An event filter is an ASCII character string used to select interesting events from an event stream. See also ASCII

event management

A facility for communicating event information to interested parties for immediate or later action. An event management system may include storage and retrieval facilities.

event monitoring

A capability to recognize, in real time, the posting of an event.

event name

The EVM event name is an ASCII character string, made up of a dot-separated series of components, with the left-most component representing the top of a notational hierarchy. Component substrings may include any combination of letters, digits, and underbar characters. There is no restriction on the number of components that can be included in an event name.

event priority

The EVM event priority is an integer value in the range 0-700, with zero being the least significant priority. The priority is assigned by the posting client. EVM uses an event priority value solely for filtering, sorting and presentation purposes. See also posting client

event summary

A format that presents event data items in an abbreviated form. A subset of the standard event data items may be selected for presentation. This format is used to scan a quantity of events to identify or isolate a specific event.

event timestamp

The UNIX system time when the event was generated. If the event includes a repeat count, the event timestamp represents the time of the first occurrence.

EVM

The implementation on this operating system of an event management system. See also event management

EVM client

Any program that processes events through a connection to the EVM daemon. See also event and EVM

EVM wildcard

An EVM event name selector may include asterisk (*) and question mark (?) wildcard characters in any component position. An asterisk represents 0 or more components with any value. A question mark represents exactly one component. See also event name

host

(1) The primary or controlling computer in the communications network. (2) A computer attached to a network.

host name

The name given to a system to identify it to local and remote users and to the network. Lowercase and uppercase letters (a-z and A-Z), numbers (0-9), periods, and dashes are permitted in host names. Valid host names contain from 2 to 63 characters with the first character being a letter. See also host and network

listening client

A client that uses the connection to the EVM daemon to listen for events distributed by the daemon. Also known as a subscribing client. See also EVM client

local host

(1) The computer system to which your terminal is directly connected. (2) In event management, local host is the host on which the event viewer is running. See also event management and remote host

network

Two or more computing systems that are linked for the purpose of exchanging information and sharing resources.

pathname

The name of a file, concatenated onto a list of the directories through which access to that file is achieved; hence, the complete name of the file. Absolute pathnames begin at the root directory and are written with an initial slash (for example, /usr/users/test/myfile.txt). Relative pathnames begin at the current working directory and are written without the initial slash (for example, test/myfile.txt).

posting client

A client that uses a connection to the EVM daemon to post events to the daemon for distribution. See also EVM client

posting host

The name of the host where an event was generated. See also event

relative pathname

A pathname that begins at the user's current working directory; it is written without the initial slash. For example, docs/myfile.txt is a relative pathname. Contrast with absolute pathname. See also pathname

remote host

(1) Any node in a network other than your local node. (2) In event management, the remote host is any host other than the host on which the event viewer is running. See also event management and local host

retrieving client

A client that uses a connection to the EVM daemon to retrieve events from the log files. See also EVM client

SysMan Menu

A menu of system management tasks organized in a tree-like hierarchy with branches of general functionality, and leaves for actual tasks. Selecting a leaf invokes a task, which opens a dialog box for performing the task. Depending on the user's display device, the SysMan Menu provides either a graphical or text-based interface. The SysMan Menu is invoked from the command line by entering /usr/sbin/sysman or from the CDE Application Manager if your system is running the CDE desktop.
