The Platform Console Manager (PCM) is a character cell application that
provides access to the consoles of subpartitions, or systems, managed by
  AMS.

You can use the Platform Console Manager over a low bandwidth connection
such as Telnet to connect to the platform's management port, connect to
consoles, view the status of each console, and view the console's log
files. You can also monitor the latest console output from the managed
systems in a continuously updated, time-stamped list located in the Plat-
  form Console Manager main window.

The Console Management Facility (CMF) ddaaeemmoonn, cmfd, provides the Platform
Console Manager access to the consoles and logs console output; it logs all
console sessions by default.	See cmfd(8) for more information.

You must be rroooott or a member of the amsuser group on the AlphaServer
Management Station (AMS) machine to run Platform Console Manager.

An Event Definition File contains individual search patterns and their
associated priorities; these patterns are compared to console output. An
eevveenntt is generated if a pattern is matched and its pprriioorriittyy is within a
  given range.

You can maintain individual Event Definition Files for platforms or con-
soles. Their correspondence is assigned in the Configure: Add/Modify Plat-
form and Configure: Add/Modify Console dialog boxes.

There are three distinct methods for creating an Event Definition File:

oo++ Entering the event definitions one at a time.

oo++ Import all the event definitions from an existing event definition
       file.

oo++ Using a combination of these methods.

The Create Event Definition File: Add dialog box opens.	This dialog
box allows you to enter an event definition, which consists of a pat-
tern, a priority, and a case sensitivity specification.

55.. Enter a regular expression in the PPaatttteerrnn:: field.

When the console output is examined and if this pattern is found, then
an event is generated, so long as the priority is within the range
       500-700.

See the grep(1) reference page for more information on regular expres-
       sions.

66.. Enter a numeric value from 100 to 700 in the PPrriioorriittyy:: field.

Use the following to determine the priority you want to assign:

       100 to 499
		 No event is generated.

       500 to 599
Event is generated when the pattern matches console output,
but no email is sent to root on the AlphaServer Management
		 Station (AMS) machine.

Use the Platform Console Manager to generate Event Manager ( EEVVMM) events
  from console messages.

To generate eevveennttss from console messages:

11.. Decide on the console messages you want to generate into an event.
For example, you may want to be notified when a system crash has
       occurred.

22.. Decide on the priority for each of these messages:

       100 to 499
		 No event is generated.

       500 to 599
		 An event is generated.

       600 to 700
An event is generated and email is sent to root on the
		 AlphaServer Management Station (AMS) machine.

33.. Incorporate this information into an Event Definition File. This file
contains the text of the console message (as a regular expression) and
the priority. For example, enter *crash* and enter a priority of 700.
When the Platform Console Manager encounters a console message that
contains the string crash, it generates an event with a priority of
700, and sends email to root on the AMS machine.

See Creating an Event Definition File for the procedure for creating
       the Event Definition File.

44.. Assign the Event Definition File when adding a platform or a console.
Because you have the ability to create Event Definition Files, you can
customize them for individual ports, as needed.

55.. Ensure that the console's EEnnaabbllee ccoonnssoollee aacccceessss, LLoogg ccoonnssoollee oouuttppuutt,

the Configure: Add/Modify Console dialog box to verify these settings.

After you configure the Platform Console Manager to generate events, you
can view the events that match your filter by opening the Event Viewer from
the Platform Console Manager's Events dialog box. See Evm(5) and the Event
Viewer's online help for more information.

You also can use EVM to notify you when interesting events occur. EVM can
display notifications on screen, in email messages, or in pager messages.

Use the Platform Console Manager main window as the launch point for all
platform and console management activities over a low bandwidth connection
  such as telnet.

  List of Systems
The top portion of the Platform Console Manager main window lists
all the platforms and consoles managed by AMS. Typically a con-
nection is for an OS console or a management port.	This infor-
mation defines the connection you want to manage.

Select any column heading to sort by that field. For instance,
to sort the entries by platform, select the PPllaattffoorrmm column head-
ing, and the entries will be sorted alphabetically by platform.
DDaattaa TTyyppee:: Alphanumeric and special characters
	    FFoorrmmaatt:: Multi-Column list

CCoonnssoollee The name given to the connection, usually an OS
		      instance.

PPllaattffoorrmm The name given to the platform.

MMooddeell The model number of the hardware.

SSttaattuuss The console connection status indicator.	Valid states
		      are:

Open A connection has been established to a console and it
is available to be used from Platform Console Manager.

	    In use (RO)
A connection has been established; all the users con-
nected to the console are in Read-Only mode.

	    In use (SH)
A connection has been established; there is at least
one user connected to the console in Shared mode and
there may be others in Read-Only mode.

	    In use (EX)
A connection has been established; there is one user
connected to the console in Exclusive mode and there
may be others in Read-Only mode.	No other Shared or
		      Exclusive connections are permitted.

Refused The connection is refused because either the port is
currently in use by some process other than the cmfd
daemon or an invalid port number was used.

Disabled The connection was disabled intentionally.

	    Inaccessible
The cmfd daemon cannot connect to the console.

Unknown A connection cannot be made because the cmfd daemon is
		      stopped or unresponsive.

You can restart the cmfd daemon.	See Restarting the
		      cmfd Daemon for more information.

	    DDeessccrriippttiioonn
A user-supplied comment that helps you identify the
		      system.

Latest Console Output for Managed Systems
The bottom portion of the Platform Console Manager main window
displays the consolidated log file for all managed systems. The
consolidated log file is the concatenation of all console output
with the addition of a time stamp and a console name for each
line. The time stamp uses the format yy/mm/dd_hh:mm:ss
	    (Year/Month/Day_Hours:Minutes:Seconds). Select any column head-
ing ( TTiimmee, SSyysstteemm, or MMeessssaaggee) to sort by that field.

The Platform Console Manager displays the console log files that
were generated during the past seven days.	To view older log
files, you must view them in the /usr/opt/ams/logs directory
	    within a terminal window.
DDaattaa TTyyppee:: Alphanumeric and special characters
	    FFoorrmmaatt:: Multi-Column list

Time indicates when the log was updated.

Console indicates which console created the log entry.

Message displays the text of the log entry.

All Platform Console Manager functions are accessible through the buttons
located between the LLiisstt ooff SSyysstteemmss and the LLaatteesstt CCoonnssoollee OOuuttppuutt.

The software stored in silicon (for example, ROM or EPROM) on a
system's CPU board. Firmware is also known as console code. Firmware
is the first software that runs when a system is turned on and it
