The Add or Modify Hard Partition dialog box displays when you press the Add or the Modify button on the Create or Modify Partition Map dialog box.
When you add or modify a hard partition, you must select the duos and duo fillers that will be assigned to or removed from the partition. You can select a duo or duo filler even if it is currently assigned to another partition.
The Add or Modify Hard Partition dialog box loads a display labeled Available platform resources that may be added to the partition you are modifying or creating, and a display labeled Resources assigned to this partition. The names loaded into the displays are obtained from the AMS.
A color-coded legend at the left hand top of the screen allows you to easily associate your work with the Resources graphical view of the partition map. As resources are assigned and unassigned, the graphical view is updated with your work.
In the Available platform resources block, select a duo to add to the partition and click Add>. The duo moves to the Resources assigned to this partition block. As you work with this dialog box, any resources already assigned to the partition you are modifying or creating appear in Resources assigned to this partition. If you select a duo in the Resources assigned to this partition block and click <Remove, you delete that duo from the partition you are modifying or creating and place it back in Available system resources. Continue to add or remove duos until you have the configuration you want.
Note: If you add a duo that is currently assigned to another partition and later remove it, the duo is placed back in the original partition; it is not left unassigned.
APW provides feedback on the validity of a partition using these rules to check validity:
Each partition must have a console and PCI drawer connection.
Each partition must have a CPU.
Each partition must have memory.
If the icon below the right-hand box is an X, there is a problem with your proposed partition. The icon appears with one of the following messages:
"This partition is not valid in the mesh.."
The duos you selected do not conform to the configuration requirements of your AlphaServer platform. To correct the problem, add or remove duos until the partition looks like a contiguous rectangle in the Resources window.
"You have not specified sufficient hardware for a valid partition."
Select additional duos to meet the minimum hardware requirements for a partition. Each partition needs at least two CPUs and a connection to an I/O drawer.
Select different duos by using the Add> and <Remove buttons until the icon turns to a check mark accompanied by the message "The hardware requirements for a valid partition have been met."
Enter the Console Name for the partition, select the OS Type that will run on the partition, and enter the Partition Name.
Click in the Enable Striping box to stripe memory access across each CPU within a duo. This helps smooth out non-uniform memory access (NUMA) memory latency differences.
Provide a name for the first soft partition, which will enable the firmware to identify it. The default name is Default_SP.
If the operating system type running on this partition is OpenVMS Galaxy, the Soft Partitions button at the bottom of the dialog box is activated. You can click on it to use the Add or Modify Soft Partition dialog box to create additional soft partitions.
