3 Installation Process
e If you purchased SunPCi III hardware separately, proceed to Panel 5, "Install Additional SODIMM."
e If the newest SunPCi Ill hardware and software was preinstalled on your system, you do not need to use this document. Proceed to the SunPCi III 3.2.1 User's Guide.
e If you have previous SunPCi hardware and software on your system, proceed to the next step in this document.
To install SunPCi III hardware, you need the following:
SunPCi Ill card
UltraSPARC system with at least one PCI slot
e Grounding wrist strap (included in the SunPCi III package) e Phillips screwdriver (not included)
If you have installed a previous version of SunPCi hardware and software, you need to perform the following tasks in this order:
1. Remove all previous SunPCi software (version 1.x or 2.x). If upgrading to a newer version of 3.x software, remove old 3.x software.
2. Remove all previous VNC software.
3. Remove all SunPCi | and II cards, since they are not supported when used with SunPCi III cards.
4. Install the SunPCi III hardware.
5. Install and configure the SunPCi III software.
6. Install Microsoft Windows or Linux software.
Note - Repeat this process to install multiple cards. Refer to the SunPCi III 3.2.1 User's Guide for more information.
Remove Old Software and Hardware
Removing Old Software 1. Become superuser. 2. Type the following command to remove old SunPCi software:
# /usr/sbin/pkgrm SUNWspci3 (or SUNWspci2 for SunPCi Il or SunPCi for SunPCi I)
3. Press Return. You are asked whether you want to remove the package currently installed.
4. Type y and press Return. You are told that scripts will be executed with superuser permission during the package removal.
5. Type y and press Return. Files scroll by as they are removed. When completed, a message appears on the screen saying software removal was successful.
6. Exit superuser.
Note - Remove all old VNC software (SUNWspvnc) on your system.
Removing Old Hardware
1. Power off your system.
2. Attach the grounding wrist strap. Attach the copper end of the wrist strap to the metal frame of the system or to the casing of the power supply. Attach the copper to bare metal and do not attach to any painted surface or labels on the power supply.
3. Remove the system cover.
4. Remove all SunPCi I and II cards.
Refer to your system documentation for instructions about removing a PCI card.
5 Install Additional SODIMM
SODIMM is the memory on your SunPCi card. To continue with the installation preparation, do the following:
1. Remove the SunPCi Ill card from its antistatic bag. Hold the card by the edges. Place it on the antistatic bag or on an antistatic mat.
2. If you purchased additional SODIMM, install it now. If you did not purchase additional SODIMM, skip this step. The SunPCi IIl card ships a standard configuration of one 256-Mbyte SODIMM installed. You can purchase and install a second SODIMM if needed. Refer to the SunPCi III SODIMM Installation Guide for more information.
Caution - The SunPCi Ill card operates only with the SODIMMs supplied by Sun. If you install a SODIMM not supplied by Sun or a Sun reseller, your warranty becomes invalid.
6 Identify and Prepare PCI Slots
To locate the PCI slots on your specific system, refer to the system documentation. Do not install the SunPCi III cards yet.
You need one PCI slot for the SunPCi III main card.
You need another PCI slot if you plan to use the USB/Firewire Backplate and another PCI slot if you plan to use the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate.
If you use the SunPCi main card and the USB/Firewire and Serial/Parallel Port options, you need three PCI slots and two of the slots must be adjacent.
Note - Installation of the SunPCi III main card and optional backplates requires careful placement of all cards into a small space.
e Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the filler panels. Remove the filler panels only from the PCI slots you plan to use.
rá Install the Optional Serial/ Parallel Port Backplate
You use the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate to connect external peripherals, such as local printers, to the system. Using this backplate is optional and if you are not using this backplate, skip this step.
This backplate contains a serial port connection and a parallel port connection. Note - If you are installing both the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate and the USB/Firewire Backplate, you must install the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate into
the SunPCi III card first.
e Attach the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate to the SunPCi Ill main card as shown below.
N
8 Install the Optional USB/Firewire Backplate
You use the USB/Firewire Backplate to connect external peripherals, such as a CD-RW drive or a digital camera, to the system. Using this backplate is optional and if you are not using this backplate, skip this step.
This backplate includes two USB 2.0 ports and one 1394a Firewire connection.
Note - Refer to the most recent SunPCi III Product Notes or to Panel 2 to verify the number of supported cards and USB/Firewire Backplates allowed per system.
e Attach the USB/Firewire Backplate to the SunPCi Ill main card as shown below.
9 Install the SunPCi Ill Card
If you are using the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate, do not allow the backplate to rest on the internal components of the system.
1. Insert the SunPCi III main card by sliding the card into the PCI slot. Tip - Secure the SunPCi III card with a retainer clip if required.
If you are using the USB/Firewire Backplate, insert the card by sliding it into the PCI slot directly adjacent to the SunPCi III main card.
Verify that both cards are fully seated into the PCI slots and also are properly connected to each other after installation.
Note - With a Sun Blade 150 system, if you use both the USB/Firewire Backplate and the Serial/Parallel Port Backplate, you must insert the SunPCi III main card into the PCI-3 slot, the USB/Firewire card into the PCI-2 slot, and the Serial/Parallel Port into the PCI-1 slot.
2. Tighten the screw on each card to secure it to the system. Use the screw that you removed from the filler panel.
Caution - Do not dislodge other cards installed in other PCI slots. Ensure that the SunPCi IIl backplates face out through the back panel.
3. To install multiple cards, repeat this procedure for each card.
1 0 Complete the Installation
1. Remove your wrist strap and detach it from the system. 2. Replace the system cover and reconnect all cables.
3. Power on the system. The system automatically reboots when you turn on the power.
4. Log in and become superuser. 5. Type the following command: # halt 6. Press Return. 7. At the ok prompt, type the following command: ok boot -r The system then reboots and brings you to the log in window.
8. Log in again. Continue with the installation described in the next panel.
Note - If your system does not recognize the SunPCi III card or reboot, the card might be seated incorrectly in the PCI slot. Turn off the power to your system, reseat the card, and repeat this procedure.
