Selecting an assessment method, instrument, and time depends on the purpose of the assessment. Assessment for determining students' background knowledge takes place at the beginning of a unit or project to facilitate planning. Throughout a unit, assessments can provide data about student progress. Teachers can use what they learn to plan instruction that meets students' needs, and students use their findings to adjust their learning processes to be more successful
At the end of a project or activity, students show what they have learned. They can do this through conventional exams, but in scientific inquiry projects, they are more likely to do this through products, presentations, or performances in the Presentation Phase.
