
                       HOMO KU SAPIENS
     A computer program playing Gomoku (Five in a row).



      The algorithm GOMOKU-RENJU used in this program
     won the gold medal of the First Computer Olympiad 
                    (London, 1989)


     
                   A Guide to Gomoku
     
     The Basic Rules:
     1. A board of 15 x 15 lines is used.
     2. Moves are made with Black and White stones.
     3. Stones are put not on the squares but on the
        intersections of lines, including board edges.
     4. Black plays the first move.
     5. The first move (Black) must be made on the central
        intersection.
     6. The purpose of the game is to get five in a row,
        vertical, horizontal or diagonal.
     7. Overline ( six or more stones in a row ) does not
        result in win.


     
           HOW TO PLAY GOMOKU WITH HOMO KU SAPIENS
     
(i) Starting the program
    To start the program type HOMOKU at the DOS prompt and
press ENTER.

    A page of rules and key definitions will appear at the
display screen. Press any key to come  through.  Then  you
will  see the game board with the first move - black stone
put on the central intersection. Game cursor - blue  cross
is also located there.
    
(ii) Selecting color
    You should choose your color right now. If you want to
play  White  make move as usual (see (iii)). If you prefer
Black color press SPACE bar.
    
(iii) Making a move
    Move cursor to the desired position with  HOME,  PGUP,
END  and/or  PGDN  keys  and  press ENTER. You will hear a
stone hit the board and this  stone  will  appear  in  the
corresponding place.
    You move is made.
 
(iv) Level
    Press F3 to change program level from 0 to 5 (and then
back to 0).
    
(v) Taking the move back
    If you  want  to  take  the  latest  move  back  press
BACKSPACE.  Than  color is changed to the opposite one. To
replace your move with another press BACKSPACE  twice  and
make another move.
    
(vi) Setup position
    Press F2 to setup position. Move cursor as  usual  and
press  INS to put White stone or DEL to put Black stone on
the board. To remove a stone from the board  place  cursor
over  it  and  press  BACKSPACE.
    Press  F2 again to finish setup. The program will play
color opposite to the latest placed stone color.
    
(vii) Sound
    You may switch sound on/off by pressing F9.
   
(viii) New game
    To start a new game press F10 or press Y when you  won
or  lose  previous  game  and a question "One more [y/n]?"
appears on the top of the board.
    
(ix) Exit game
    To exit "Homo ku Sapiens" press ESC.
