MYTHS OF OLYMPUS<
<
Have you played this game before?<
(Y/N)
*102
If Zeus gave you a gift at the end of
the last game, type the name of the
gift here and press ENTER.<
<
Otherwise, just press ENTER.
*103
Where do you want to start?<
<
1. At school<
2. In the maze<
3. On the way to Olympus<
*105
Your name is [name]. Is that right?
(Y/N)
*106
The chalk makes a horrible squeaking
noise as Mr. Panagoulias writes a very
long test question on the board. The
squeaking in your ears just makes the
sinking feeling in your stomach feel
worse.
*107
You stayed up late last night doing a
book of puzzles and mazes. You forgot to
read the book of Greek myths that
Mr. Panagoulias assigned. And now he is
giving you a surprise test.
*108
"The ancient Greeks told many stories
that helped to explain things that
happened in nature," Mr. Panagoulias
writes on the board. "Lightning, the
movement of the sun across the sky,
and even love were subjects for these
stories or myths. In your own words,
tell the story of a Greek myth from
the book you read last night," he
writes.<
<
You are doomed!
*109
Well, at least you can write your name
on your paper. That may be all you
CAN write, so you'd better do a good
job, you think.
*110
You wrote [name] on your paper. Is that
right? (Y/N)
*111
You stare at your test paper. You don't
know a single Greek myth. You would
give anything to be anywhere else right
now. You look longingly at the portable
tape player under your desk. Ah, if only
you were walking home right now,
listening to music, instead of taking a
test on some dusty old stories that
you've never read...
*112
Suddenly, a loud CRASH wakes you from a
sound sleep.<
<
You must have nodded off in class.
*113
You blink and look around you.
This is not Mr. Panagoulias's classroom.
The walls around you are made of
shining marble and you can see the sky
above. Your tape player is lying
beside you. "Yipes!" you cry. "Where
am I?"
*114
"You are in Crete, young [name]," says a
gruff voice behind you. You turn and
see an old man dressed in white robes.
"My name is Daedalus," he says. "I am
an inventor. You are in the maze that
I built for King Minos of Crete. And
you are also in a certain amount of
trouble."
*115
"Yes, trouble with Mr. Panagoulias," you
mutter.<
<
"Your trouble is much greater than Mr.
Panagoulias," Daedalus says. "You have
insulted Zeus and Hera, the king and
queen of the gods of ancient Greece.
*116
They have brought you here, through time
and space, to answer charges that you
have scorned the great tales of the gods
and heroes of Greece."<
<
"I forgot to read the book," you admit
in a tiny voice.
*117
"Zeus and Hera have declared that you
must learn your lesson the hard way,"
Daedalus says. "Zeus has sent the gods
and goddesses to this maze to hide from
you. You must find them and listen
carefully to their stories. Then you
must find your way out of the maze."
*118
"If you do, you will come before Zeus
and Hera to answer their questions about
the gods. If you answer their questions
correctly, they will send you home
again. If you do not...well, you could
spend a very long time in this maze,"
Daedalus says.<
<
"Okay," you say. "I'm good at mazes."
*119
Daedalus laughs kindly. "You MAY be able
to find your way out of this maze, if
you draw a map," he says. "But the
finest map in the world cannot help you
against what you will find within these
walls."<
<
"What is that?" you ask.
*120
"You should have read your book,
[name]!" Daedalus says seriously . "The
dreadful Minotaur lives inside this
labyrinth. The Minotaur is a hideous
creature with a human head and the body
of a bull."
*121
"It is ferocious, and always hungry,
Daedalus says. "Unless you have some
powerful magic, it will just take what
it wants. And that probably means you!"
*122
"Well, I don't know any magic," you say.
You look around. You don't have very
much with you. "Do you think the
Minotaur would want my tape player
instead of me?" you ask hopefully.
*123
"No," Daedalus says, laughing.
"Perhaps the gods you meet in the maze
will be able to give you something
magical enough to defeat the Minotaur.
Now, as for your 'tape player,' as you
call it....Does it also record
speech?"<
<
"Yes," you answer.
*124
"Then turn it on, [name]," Daedalus
advises. "It will help you to remember
all that the gods tell you. And your
memory must be good, for Zeus and Hera
will ask you some difficult questions at
the end of your journey...if you find
your way out of this maze."
*125
"Good luck, [name]! If you need to know
more, just ask for HELP." Daedalus
turns and goes, leaving you alone in the
maze.<
You look at the marble walls around you.
You have that sinking feeling in your
stomach again. You turn on your tape
recorder and choose a path to follow.
