About this software manual
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear customer!

When the ROCK'N ROLL manual was printed, the PC version of the game was merely
an idea rather than a finished product. At this time, we were not certain just
how this PC version would look. Therefore we have provided this supplementary
manual in which you will find everything needed to install and enjoy the game!

Please read this manual carefully before attempting to install ROCK'N ROLL. If
you would like to print out the contents of this manual, you may save it to a
standard ASCII file at the end of the program. You can then edit and manipula-
te it how you wish to.

Hardware requirements
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROCK'N ROLL runs on the IBM PC, PC/XT, PC/AT as well as on 100% compatibles.
MS-DOS version 3.00 or higher, a minimum of 300 Kb free RAM, and a Hercules,
CGA, or EGA/VGA video card, are required.

As the game is not copy-protected, it can be easily installed on your hard-
disk. Keyboard, Microsoft compatible mouse, and PC joysticks are supported.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Command line options
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although the game detects video and sound-hardware by itself, you can override
the auto-detection by using these command line options:

/VCGA - Use the CGA video mode.
Please use this option only with a 100% compatible CGA card!
Most EGA/VGA cards will fail - even those that claim "CGA
                  compatibility at register level".

To utilize this video mode you should select either "1.Sup-
port all video adapters" or "2.Hercules or CGA or small EGA"
                  when installing the game.

/VHERC - Use the Hercules video mode.
You don't need CGA emulation utilities, as ROCK'N ROLL sup-
                  ports the Hercules card directly.

To utilize this video mode you should select either "1.Sup-
port all video adapters" or "2.Hercules or CGA or small EGA"
                  when installing the game.

/VEGA, /VVGA - Use the EGA video mode.

To utilize this video mode you should select either "1.Sup-
port all video adapters" or "3. EGA or VGA" when installing
                  the game.

/V64EGA - Use "safe" CGA video mode with EGA color palettes.
This mode is meant for the "small" EGA (64 Kb) as well as
monochrome EGA/VGA systems. Why? This mode uses the CGA-gra-
phics with only 4 colors. Therefore the shapes of certain
objects have been drawn more distinguishable. Also different
color palettes allow you to select the palette which suits
                  your monochrome monitor best.

To utilize this video mode you should select either "1.Sup-
port all video adapters" or "2.Hercules or CGA or small EGA"
                  when installing the game.

/MBEEP - Use the infamous "beeper" instead of an AdLib card.
This one is meant for users with an AdLib card who would
like to know how the game sounds without it. We don't know
why, however, sometimes human beings take pleasure in doing
                  unreasonable things like that...

Game control and changes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Controlling ROCK'N ROLL with the keyboard, the mouse, and the joystick
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During this chapter, expressions like "up" or "down" are used to describe ei-
ther movement of the mouse or the joystick, or pressing the approbriate cursor
key on the keyboard.

ROCK'N ROLL detects a joystick (port #1) at start up and lets you adjust it.
If you don't want to use the joystick, simply abort the adjustment. For some
strange reason ROCK'N ROLL may also detect joysticks that are not connected
(some Tandy PC's). Should this occur, please ignore the adjustment and
continue.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Differences between the PC version and other versions
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personal Achievement Code PAC instead of the "secret numbers"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other versions allow the input of a "secret number" instead of your name. Once
you have entered a valid number, you can play a corresponding level. However,
it will now be impossible to exit this level. Also, your score does not count.
Each time, one wants to play ROCK'N ROLL, he or she must start at the very be-
ginning.
The PC version does not support those "secret numbers", however, uses PAC's in-
stead: In every fourth level you are given a PAC. The PAC contains information
about how the last level was finished.By confirming your name in the menu with
<Tab> instead of <Enter> you can input a PAC and restart the game from your
last position.

Screen design and level map
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The screen design has changed quite a lot. However, the information provided in
the printed manual is still valid and sufficent. The map has also changed.

Level design
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The design of some of the levels has been altered for various reasons. There-
fore there may be differences between earlier level descriptions and the PC
version of this game.
