To start the STATS On-Line Services Communications program,
type "STATS" at the DOS prompt and press the enter key.

<1> Call STATS On-Line Services
-------------------------------

This option will actually dial up STATS On-Line Services, through
TYMNET, using the parameters set by you in the "Set Communications
Parameters" option. It will automatically log you into TYMNET and
connect you with STATS' computer. You will then have access to all
of the on-line services provided by STATS, Inc. These services
include downloading all currently available EWB files as well as
providing access to STATS On-Line and other STATS' products.

IMPORTANT: If you wish to download EWB files, you must first select
which files you want to retrieve prior to calling STATS. Also, calling
STATS will not automatically retrieve files. Files will only be

downloaded (from your previously selected list) if you choose that
option once you are connected to STATS' computer. You don't have to
delete your previous selection list if you just want to use other
    STATS On-Line Services products.

Once connected to STATS On-Line Services, you will be asked for your
USERNAME and PASSWORD. These are your personal USERNAME and PASSWORD
you requested when you first registered with STATS.

If you are not already a STATS customer, the first time you call STATS
you must register as a STATS On-Line Services user. To do this, use
the Registration USERNAME and PASSWORD that came with your Earl Weaver
Baseball software. Signing on with this account will walk you through
the steps to register your own personal USERNAME and PASSWORD.

Before you call to register, decide on the USERNAME and PASSWORD
you would like to request. The USERNAME and PASSWORD should be a
minimum of eight (8) alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9). You should
also have credit card and address information ready.

NOTE: While your USERNAME and PASSWORD should be something you can
remember easily, do not pick something that can be easily guessed,
such as first and last names, birth dates, etc. Remember, you are
charged for each access made using your USERNAME and PASSWORD.

    Some helpful hints:
    -------------------

Before dialing, this program verifies that the the modem is working
correctly. If it does not get the correct response from the modem,
you will get a message like this:

Your modem is not responding to normal commands. It could be
turned off or incorrectly connected. If you think everything
is OK, another option is to reset your modem to the factory
specifications. Enter T to try again, R to reset to factory,
       or Q to quit. [T/R/Q]?

Most of the time you will find that, for an external modem, you just
forgot to turn your modem on. It's also possible that you used the
incorrect parameters when you used the Set Communications Parameters
option. In rare occasions, you may find that the settings for your
modem have been changed, either by you or some other software. We have
found that resetting a modem's parameters to the factory defaults (using
the AT&F command) corrects this problem.

Type ? or HELP for help
    -----------------------

You will receive this line on your screen each time you call STATS. This
is a KERMIT message that you MUST ignore. KERMIT writes out this message
when it starts executing in case you don't know how to use it. However,
all of the necessary commands to run KERMIT have been built in. Just be
patient, let the program start executing its commands and you will be on
    your way shortly.

<2> Select EWB Files for Download
---------------------------------

This function will allow you select which EWB files you want to
download. The first set of options let you:

          <1> Add to list
          <2> Delete entire list
          <3> Delete one item

STATS creates EWB files on Monday each week during the Major League
Baseball Season. The files are generally available by 3:00 Central Time
each Monday and contain statistical data for games through the previous
day (Sunday). There are three types of EWB files that STATS provides.
    These are:
                     1. Year-to-Date Files
                     2. Weekly Files
                     3. Year End Files

    1. Year-to-Date Files contain full season information on all players
who have played through the previous Sunday.

    2. Weekly Files contain one week of statistical information for the
        previous Monday through Sunday.

    3. Year End Files are generated at the end of the MLB Championship
Season and correspond to the Data Disks currently available for EWB.

As Year-to-Date and Weekly files are created each Monday, there will be
new files added each week. A unique naming convention has been developed
to allow you to select files for either the current week or for previous
    weeks.

If you want the most up-to-date YTD or Weekly files, just select
"Current Year-to-Date" or "Current Week". If you want these files
from previous weeks, you must know the "week" of the season. For
example, the 1991 MLB Season started on Monday, April 8. The first
EWB files would have been created on Monday, April 15, for the games
of week 1 of the season. If you had been downloading files from the
beginning of the season, all you would do each week is select the
current weekly or YTD file (which one is up to you). If you skipped
retrieving files created on July 15 and 22 because you were on vacation,
you can select those by indicating you want the files for week 14 and 15.
Just count forward from the first full week to get the correct file number.

You have the option of retrieving up to 10 different files in each
download. The program will not let you ask for duplicates within a
download. However, it will not prevent you from retrieving the same
file more than once. You must provide your own file management.

Once you've selected the files you would like to download, call
STATS On-Line Services. By selecting the Earl Weaver Baseball option
after logging into STATS, you can select the download option to do
the actual retrieval of the files. You will be prompted with the
necessary instructions to complete the download.

<3> Set Communications Parameters
---------------------------------

There are four parameters you must set in order to communicate with
    STATS. They are:

    <1> Baud Rate
    <2> COM Port
    <3> Dialing Method
    <4> TYMNET

Baud Rate - STATS can accept modem speeds of 300, 1200, 2400 and 9600.
--------- This must be set to the speed of your modem.

COM Port - This version of KERMIT can operate on COM Ports 1, 2, 3
-------- or 4. A common mistake of new users is to set this
parameter to the wrong port. Make sure you know which port your modem
    is attached to.

Dialing Method - Set this option to the appropriate Pulse (Rotary) or
-------------- Tone (Touch-Tone) dialing method. Though most touch-tone
telelphone lines utilize Tone dialing, some will continue to use Pulse
dialing even though the telephone may be a touch-tone.

TYMNET Number - This is the telephone number of the TYMNET location in
------------- your area. If you do not know the telephone number you
should use, you can reach TYMNET Customer Service 24 hours a day at
    (800) 336-0149. Remember, the telephone number you use must coincide
with the baud rate of your modem.
