TIPS FOR PLAYING EMPIRE DELUXE VIA MODEM OR DIRECT CONNECT CABLE

First, please make sure you are familiar with setting up and playing a
basic game of Empire Deluxe, and that you are familiar with the basics of
your modem. The most important thing for you to know is which COM port
your modem is connected to, and whether or not it is Hayes AT compatible.
If you do not already know this information, please consult the owners
manual for your computer and/or modem, or the retailer where you purchased
them.

If you plan to connect two computers together directly via a direct
connect cable, you will need either a serial cable with a null modem
adapter, or a null modem cable. Be careful when you select a null modem
cable, as you will need one with a full complement of pins coming through.
Some cables only have a few pins wired through, and they will not work.
This cable should be connected between the COM ports of the two computers.

Empire Deluxe requires that you use its configuration program
"ECONFIG" to set the game for whatever remote connection you will be
using. ECONFIG is found inside the /games/empire directory (or whatever
directory you copied Empire Deluxe into during installation). Once you
have run ECONFIG, you will need to make changes in the "Remote" section.
In the remote menu, you will see several COM ports listed. Select the COM
port that your modem or direct connect cable will be connected to and
change its status to reflect modem or direct connect. There are default
values listed for Port and IRQ and they should generally be correct. If
they are not, you will need to consult the manual for your modem. The
baud rate listed at the end is only the default setting; you can always
change the baud rate from within Empire Deluxe. Once done setting the
appropriate values, save your changes, and exit ECONFIG.

Anyone you want to play via remote will need his own Empire Deluxe,
and will also have to have configured his system correctly as described
above.

Once everyone has their Empire Deluxe correctly configured and up and
running, you are ready to begin a remote game. One of the players will
act as the "game master" and everyone else will be a "remote slave." The
game master is the player who will set up the actual map and scenario for
everyone else. Once the connection is made, the map and scenario will be
transmitted to all slave systems. Keep in mind that should more than one
player try to be the game master (i.e. create the game) the game will stop
running.

The game master will need to set up the game the way he would set up
a normal game of Empire Deluxe; he will choose a basic, standard or
advanced game, and make or load a map and/or scenario. On the player
setup screen, the game master will need to select each player and how they
will be connected. If the game has been configured correctly, one of the
options under Player Type will be the Com port that the modem or direct
connect cable is connected to. Please keep in mind that one player should
be the local player (the game master). If for example, you were playing
with a friend over a modem connected to COM port 1, with one computer
player, the players might be listed like this:

1. Person - local (this means YOU)
2. Person - Rmt COM1
3. Computer - easy

Anyone other than the game master will only need to select "Remote
Slave" from the Game Start Options menu of their game. They should not set
up a game.

If you have chosen to connect via modem or direct connect, you will
find yourself in the serial port connection menu. Here you can change the
baud rate should you need to. The baud rate you select will need to be
the same on both ends, and both modems will need to be able to handle the
selected baud rate.

There are two choices for connection: automatic and manual. Automatic
will make a connection and immediately jump into the game of Empire
Deluxe. Manual connect will allow you to send commands to your modem
(should your modem not be Hayes AT compatible), or to chat with the other
player (assuming he also choose manual connect). Should you complete your
connection to another player while in manual connect, and you see a line
starting with ! ED be aware that this is Empire's way of trying to start
the game. You will need to select "Play Game" (Alt-P) from the menu to
start the game. [Both players will need to select "Play Game" on their
end to start the game.]

Whatever your choice in terms of auto or manual connect, with a modem
you will still need to have Empire dial the other player. One player
should choose wait for call and the other should choose dial. The dial
and wait function will only work for Hayes AT compatible modems. Should
you have something other than that, you will need to use manual connect,
and you will need to type in the correct commands for your own modem.

Once you have entered the phone number and dialed, or completed the
direct connection, Empire Deluxe will give you the status of the
transmission.
