Mission #15:
May 25 (Morning). This is the Argentines' national holiday, and they
probably will try to celebrate it by sinking you! You have been assigned
as a picket ship to the west of the Falklands to provide advance warning
to the fleet of Argentine air attacks. The aircraft will concentrate on
eliminating your ship so that they can carry out attacks against the main
body of the invasion fleet to the northeast of the Falklands. This is a
difficult scenario as there will be many Skyhawks and Mirages attacking
from different directions, as well as low-flying Super Etendard aircraft
armed with Exocet missiles. Watch your radar screens carefully and listen
to your EW officer, because Exocet attacks occur suddenly and with little
warning.

Background: This was the Argentines' national holiday, and the British
forces braced themselves for the expected onslaught of even more attacking
Mirage and Skyhawks. To give the forces in San Carlos Bay more advance
warning of impending air attacks, the HMS Coventry and HMS Broadsword were
dispatched to take up a radar picket position between the Falklands and
the mainland of Argentina. Four attacking Skyhawks concentrated on these
picket ships. The HMS Coventry was hit with three 1000-pound bombs, which
all exploded. The Coventry capsized and sank in 20 minutes. The HMS
Broadsword was also hit, but remained operational.
