Mission #11:
April 15. Assist friendly aircraft in destroying the Jamahiriyah Barracks
in Benghazi, the Benina Airfield and a new SA-5 missile site.

Background: Six A-6 jets locked their sights on the Jamahiriyah Barracks
in Benghazi. They met heavy anti-aircraft fire, but succeeded in dropping
Snakeye bombs on the target, inflicting heavy damage. Five grounded MiG
jets also took damage, four were totally destroyed. Six more A-6s made
their attack east of Benghazi at the Benina Airfield. Five A-6s were each
equipped with 12 (twelve) 500-pound Rockeye cluster bombs. The remaining
A-6 was loaded with twelve Snakeyes. They leveled the airfield, destroying
much of the grounded aircraft as well. This aircraft included: MiG-23s,
Mi-8 helicopters, Boeing 727s, F-27 transport, and two lesser planes. A
new SA-5 missile site was also destroyed.

All of the U.S. aircraft involved were flying over the Mediterranean by
