F-14 Fires Upon An Iranian F-4: 8 August 1987
Mission #2:
August 8. An Iranian F-4 aircraft has been detected flying on course
toward a U.S. P-3 Orion patrol plane. Destroy the F-4 before it reaches
the P-3.

Background: On August 8, a plane taking off from the Iranian air field at
Bandar Abbas was detected by U.S. radar. The signal indicated that the
aircraft was an F-4 fighter-bomber. The Iranian F-4 was flying out to the
gulf, on a course toward a U.S. P-3 Orion radar plane. Two U.S. F-14s met
the Iranian pilot before his potential destination. One of the Tomcats
fired off a pair of Sparrow missiles. The distance of exchange was between
5 and 20 miles. The American pilot missed his target. The F-4, however,
altered its course and left.
