Silkworm Attacks on Two Tankers:  15 October 1987
Mission #4:  
October 15. Take up picket duty and protect both fleet and shipping 
vessels from attack. 

Background:  On October 15, the U.S.-owned, Liberian-registered tanker the
Sungari, was struck on its starboard side by an Iranian-launched Silkworm 
missile. The Sungari was anchored in Kuwaiti waters. The Silkworm traveled
south from Faw, and struck its target 40 miles away.

Mission #5:  
October 16. Take up picket duty and protect both fleet and shipping 
vessels from attack. Silkworm attacks are expected again today.

Background:  On October 16, the U.S.-flagged Kuwaiti tanker, the Sea Isle 
City, received a blow to its starboard side from a Silkworm missile. The 
Sea Isle City was about 7 miles off the coast of Kuwait, and between 40 
and 50 miles from the Silkworm's launching point at Faw. Nineteen members 
of the crew were injured.
