The Rostam Offshore Oil Platform: 19 October 1987
Mission #6:
October 19. Destroy the Iranian Rostam offshore oil platform.

Background: On October 19, in the lower gulf, six U.S. ships and Navy
aircraft closed in on Iran's Rostam offshore oil platform. Four
destroyers, the Hoel, Kidd, Leftwich and Young, positioned themselves in
clear sight of the platform. The frigate Thatch and guided-missile cruiser
Standley offered support from a distance. Patrolling the air were a pair
of F-14s and an E-2C. The destroyers issued a warning to the Naval Guards
on the rig, allowing them time to evacuate. The U.S. forces received no
hostile response. Using their Mark-45 guns, the destroyers attacked the
platform, firing off 1,065 rounds. Navy SEALS went aboard the already
crippled platforms and planted explosives.
