Submarines Coming out to Sea: 12 August 1993
Mission #6:
August 12. Provide anti-submarine warfare screen for the allied relief
convoy off the coast of Yugoslavia.

Background: The Soviets fired at ships they thought contained weapons and
not the relief supplies they actually held. The Ticonderoga-class cruisers
were ordered to provide an anti-submarine warfare screen for the allied
relief convoy off the coast of Yugoslavia, but were instead being used for
target practice by a number of aircraft. The U.S. ships fired Harpoon
missiles to deter further firing from a Soviet ship and three patrol
boats. There were reports of submarines being deployed into the waters and
heading toward the Ticonderoga-class ships from different directions,
while a KA-25 helicopter was performing anti-submarine warfare fifty miles
from the AEGIS location.
