Navigation

All ships depend on accurate navigation. The plot board, a chart of the
current area of operations, is kept current minute-by-minute. Inputs from
your inertial navigation system and radar plots are added to the
information from the plot board to ensure that you are on the correct
course. In AEGIS, two plot boards are provided. The first is the Area of
Operations Map. This map provides an aerial view of the entire field of
battle along with land masses and the symbology of all the targets in the
area. The Tactical Plot Map allows you to hook, identify, attack and
manipulate the targets. The captain of a Ticonderoga-class ship must
always refer to a plot board before firing any weapons. In real life,
weapons reach can extend well beyond the area on a chart. If a weapon
misses a target, it may seek another target farther away than the original
target's location. An unsuspecting passenger liner or coastal city could
get a nasty surprise from a poorly aimed missile! Fortunately you do not
need to worry about wayward weapons in AEGIS blowing up a civilian target.
However, it can add a dimension of realism to the simulation to be aware
of the impact of faulty decision-making in real-life naval warfare.
