Tactics
Tactics are divided into three parts: sub-surface action, surface
engagements or anti-air operations.

Sub-Surface Action
Submarine commanders, by their very nature, live by stealth and will do
almost anything to sneak up on a target. Seldom will a submarine risk
exposing its position.

Passive Sonar allows you to inconspicuously detect a target and to deploy
countermeasures, while Active Sonar allows you to lock onto a target in
order to launch an attack against the enemy submarine. Active Sonar is
limited in range and gives away your position, so Passive Sonar is your
preferred means of initial detection for sub-surface threats. A datum is
the plotted or suspected position of an enemy submarine. Once you detect a
submarine, you can pinpoint his datum using Active Sonar and fire an ASROC
or two in his direction. Generally, it is not a good idea to linger around
a known submarine datum.
