Dangers to you from the submarine include wake-following torpedoes,
wire-guided torpedoes and sub-launched cruise missiles. Any torpedo fired
will produce a very distinctive and shrill noise as the turbines and
propeller blades propel the weapon to very high speeds. Your ship cannot
outrun a torpedo, so you must use Passive Sonar to deploy countermeasures
against an incoming torpedo.

Surface Engagements
When you are engaged against a surface ship, you should be able to
identify the target before firing upon it (unlike most airborne attacks
that occur too quickly to allow for identification of the enemy missile or
aircraft). In real naval operations, the most accurate identification is
made with the human eye. A ship's helicopter would normally be called upon
to visually identify the suspect. If bad weather prohibits normal flight
operations, the Ticonderoga cruiser captain has to rely upon other assets
such as joint Maritime Patrol aircraft, carrier aircraft or NATO aircraft
for identifying a suspect. Satellite surveillance is also used, although
satellite orbits may not cover the area in question. In AEGIS, we make the
identification process significantly easier. If your sensors detect the
target, you can identify it by hooking it and then accessing an on-line
warbook. James' Warbook provides all the information you need to disable
or destroy a target, but you must react quickly and correctly in order to
achieve success. Keep in mind that you will rarely be under attack by only
