Anti-Air Operations
To succeed in anti-air operations, defend your ship while destroying
valuable enemy aircraft. You must project an umbrella of coverage against
any air threat you may encounter. Normally, aircraft must remain below
supersonic speeds to fire missiles at you. They must also use targeting
radar to ensure that they have a good fire control solution before launch.
This solution is then entered into the missile's computer to help it find
you. Be diligent and monitor an enemy's flight path. When the time comes
to engage him, you'll know it. Also, remember that the earth's curvature
causes a shadow effect which can hinder your radar. The enemy also knows
this and may position his attacking force outside your detection range.

By the time you detect a missile on your radar system, you have very
little time left to react. When you see a fast-moving target coming right
at you, get your CIWS Phalanx on-line and ready to shoot in the automatic
mode. This weapon is the best chance you'll have in stopping this threat.
After setting the CIWS in automatic mode, use the SLQ-32 ECM to launch
countermeasures. Then you should look along the track of the missile to
find the aircraft that launched the missile. He may send another missile
your way soon! Beware of coordinated attacks that may come from different
compass directions. Couple these coordinated air attacks with surface and
sub-surface engagement, and you will probably begin to appreciate the
problems of naval warfare and the officers who command these fine ships.
