Selecting a State of Readiness and Firing Your Weapons
Each weapon system site can be in one of four states of readiness: safe,
arm, lock or fire. To change the state of readiness for a weapon system,
click the left mouse button on the next desired state or enter "Ctrl-U" or
"Ctrl-D" to move up or down the states. The keystrokes will only affect
the active weapon site as described above in Selecting a Weapon.
If the Digital Voice option is toggled on, voice messages will confirm
changes to a weapon site's state of readiness. For example, you might hear
"Tomahawk Armed" or "I have a target lock for ADCAP" when you change
states of readiness. Error messages are provided for the following changes
of readiness state:

Changing from SAFE to ARM: The "Weapon Empty" message means that you have
no rounds of ammunition (missiles, etc.) left.

Changing from ARM to LOCK: The "No Target Selected" message indicates
that you have no hooked target. The "Target Out of Range" message means
that the target is outside the weapon site's arc. (See the notes below for
information on arc ranges.) This message will occur only with the CIWS and
5-inch gun weapon systems. For example, you will receive the "Target Out
of Range" message if you try to use the fore gun to fire at a target
behind the ship. The "Target a Friendly" message informs you that you
cannot lock on a friendly target. The "Illegal Weapon Use" message
