Sonar
The Sonar Screen monitors surface and sub-surface contacts and can help
you locate torpedoes, submarines and surface vessels (by sensing surface
wake). Use Active Sonar when you must quickly find, identify and destroy
the enemy target. In such a case, it does not matter whether the enemy
detects your presence, because you are prepared to attack him immediately.
Passive Sonar can be used to "listen in" on potential targets. The TACTAS
Passive Sonar device is normally used at low speeds to ensure the most
accurate readings of any possible targets, surface and sub- surface, in
the area. Passive Sonar is the preferred choice if you want to maintain a
high level of covertness. The drawback of Active Sonar is that it
transmits your location to enemy submarines just as readily as it shows
you where the enemy subs are lurking. Enemy submarines outside the
detection of a surface ship's screw noise can easily detect active
acoustic signatures at a great distance. When a ping goes from the center
of the screen, it reveals the submerged targets in the area. The large
blips represent the submarines, and the small blips represent the
torpedoes. The targets' locations are shown relative to your ship's
location. Use active ping sparingly to remain undetected. Phased Sonar is
more sensitive, and can detect smaller objects around your ship.
