1986 - LIBYA: BOMBING OF TRIPOLI|
The attack against Libya came after President Reagan challenged Col.
Muammar Qaddafi's "Line of Death," which ran 100 miles north of Libya's
coast.|
The bombing was in response to Libyan-sponsored terrorism in West
Germany and was a joint Navy/Air Force "exercise." The attack itself
included F-111 fighter/bombers flown from the United Kingdom and naval
assets of the U.S. Battle Group on station within the Line of Death.
Engagements took place against well-armed Libyan patrol boats, as well
as shore installations, airfields and command-and-control bunkers.
