Geneva Lake has a maximum width of 14 km and a length of 72 km.
The lower part of the lake (called "petit Lac") gets +/- 1 km
narrow. Numerous rivers and brooks debouch into the lake. The
water-level can rise or fall several centimeters or decimeters in
a matter of minutes. These sudden changes in water-level are
called "seiches". The average difference between the highest and
lowest level of the water is about 1.5 meter. The wind, mostly
North-East and South-East, can cause heavy storms. These storms
rage mainly on the Northern wine-growing areas of "La Cte" and
"Laveaux". Apart from the wine-growing, the tourism is very
important in this area.

There are six harbours in the area:
* Geneva
* Nyon
* Clarens
* Thonon
* Lausanne
* Morges
