This area between the towns of Joure and Sneek consists of the
"Sneekermeer", the "Langweerderwielen", the "Koevordermeer" and
all connecting waters and lakes in between.
The "Sneekermeer", together with the "Goingarijpsterpoelen",
"Zoute Poel", "Terkaplesterpoelen" and "Terhornsterpoelen" is one
big water area which is navigable for yachts with +/- 1.20 meter
draught. On the East side of the "Sneekermeer" however, is the
so-called "Gravinneweg". This is a collection of very hard,
shallow sand-banks, which are a dangerous lee-shore with Westwind.
The "Langweerderwielen" is a nicely sheltered, long-drawn water
with an area of 218 hectare. In the South-West corner of the lake,
there is a shallow with beacons.
The "Koevordermeer", orientated North-South, is 3 kilometers long.
The fairway is part of the "Prinses Margrietkanaal", which is used
intensively by cargo-boats. Apart from the very shallow part along
the buoys of the fairway in the North-East part of the lake, the
"Koevordermeer" is navigable also outside the buoys with a draught
of 1.0 meter.
