Star : two-men keelboat 6.89 19.91 750 - -
William Gardner made the first design of the Star in 1911. The
boat acquired its final sail plan in 1929. Nowadays the Star class
is one of the most popular keelyacht classes in the world.
The Star has hard chines: the sides are straight and the bottom is
bent. The keel of this boat is a ballast keel made of cast iron.
For this reason the Star can't capsize, but it can sink. A big
cutwater is fixed to the keel, the rudder is fastened to the
cutwater.
The velocity of the Star is not very high. The characteristics
are good, although the crew already has to hang on the sides of
the boat at moderate wind speed.
The Star class has a very wide tolerance range on the dimensions.
That makes it possible for the companies that build the Star to
fine-tune the design.
