ANVIL OF DAWN
-------------

The following information supplements that found in the manual.

Mouse terminology:
------------------
Anvil Of Dawn is designed for a standard two-button mouse.

"Click" or "clicking" refers to pressing and releasing the left mouse button.
"R-click" or "R-clicking" refers to pressing and releasing the right mouse button.

Encumbrance (page 22):
----------------------
Encumbrance does not automatically exhaust the character. It simply
increases the rate at which you become exhausted while performing strenuous
activity.

Weapons Experience (page 22):
-----------------------------
The experience bonus for a weapon is based on that weapon's primary
category. For example, a throwing blade will use the ranged experience in
melee attacks as well as ranged attacks.

The Character Sheet (pages 26-31):
----------------------------------
The character portrait is a mirror-image of your character. For example, placing
an item in the hand on the left of the portrait places it in the left hand of
the Player Character. Containers will only open if placed in the hand
on the right of the character portrait. Using a container will automatically
place it in the correct hand and open it.

The Spell Book is enchanted such that flipping the last spell page in the
book returns you to the first.

The information icons for Active Magics, Afflictions, and Encumbrance will
change their appearance based on their current information. For example, if
you are suffering from an affliction, the skull will turn from gray to green.

The Experience Levels information icon will also show how many experience
levels you have gained (but not yet assigned) as well as your progress towards
gaining the next experience level. Unassigned experience levels have no
effect on gameplay. Experience levels are assigned when going from a
'dungeon' to an outside area.

The Encumbrance information icon will also show your total weight carried,
and the amount of weight you can carry before becoming encumbered.

Throwing Items:
---------------
If you have an item attached to your cursor on the gaming screen, moving it
to the center of the screen will change the cursor into a blue gauntlet.
Clicking while the blue gauntlet is displayed will throw the item. Normal,
non-lightweight objects thrown at creatures may hurt them slightly, and
ranged weapons will be thrown as if from your hand.

R-clicking spell icons:
---------------------------
R-clicking a spell icon will automatically take you to that spell's page in
your spell book.

Keys used for easier keyboard play:
-----------------------------------
Several keys add easy of game play for those who wish to play primarily with the
keyboard:

F1 = Help
F2 = Save/Restore.
F3 = Options.
A = Automap.
C = Character Sheet.
D = Drop the item on the cursor in either the Character Sheet or Game Screen.
G = Get object directly in front of the Player Character.
L = Use item in hand on left.
R = Use item in hand on right.
P = Push or Pull button or lever directly in front of the Player Character.
V = Toggles the Interface between Visible and Invisible.

Player Character and NPC voices:
--------------------------------
Should you experience a static-like distortion when listening to game voices,
please try the following:

Reduce the treble level on your speakers, and do not use any treble boost
function which may be available on your sound equipment. From the options
screen, increase the volume on the voices.

Logitech 3D Swift Controllers (Cyberman, WingMan Warrior, and others):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Anvil will automatically detect and activate support for these controllers.
It is recommended that you run your mouse driver in DUAL mode and use your
normal mouse for any game actions which you find difficult to do using
the 3D controller.

The "fourth button" on the new 3D controllers will throw an object if one
is attached to your cursor.

If you need to disable automatic detection of SWIFT devices type in the
following command before you run Anvil:

        SET DFI_SWIFT_OFF=1

To re-enable SWIFT detection type in

        SET DFI_SWIFT_OFF=

Middle Button

The middle button on some mice and 3D controllers will:

a) attack a monster in front of you with the weapon in the hand on the left
b) press a button on the wall directly in front of you
c) open a chest in front of you
d) get an object on the ground in front of you

This middle button action will allow 3D controller players to easily do some
of the common game activities without using their normal mouse.

Gravis Ultrasound Users:
------------------------
Install Anvil of Dawn.
Run GRAVIS.BAT

This sets up the Ultrasound and runs Anvil of Dawn.

Troubleshooting
---------------
If the install program says you do not have enough free space to Install
Anvil of Dawn:

   1. If you are running DoubleSpace, DriveSpace, Stacker or any kind of
      disk compression:

	 a. DOS reports what the disk compressor tells it to report and
not the TRUE value of Disk Space available.

	 b. You must free up space to install properly. Failure to ensure
that enough REAL space is available will result in Anvil of Dawn
	    not functioning properly.

   2. If you are running from Windows or Windows 95:

	 a. Windows tends to save the files even after they have been
deleted or moved to the Recycle Bin.

	 b. Norton Utilities also will report more Disk Space then is
available due to the Recycle Bin and protecting deleted files.

	 c. Even though DOS reports you have enough free Disk Space you
can only use whatever space if really available.

      Fix:

If you are running Windows 95 and Norton Utilities for Windows 95
you must select the Recycle Bin by clicking with the Right Mouse
Button, then selecting Empty Norton Protected Files.

If you are using another version of a Utility that saves deleted
files then you must discard those files as well.
