                     Additional features of CA 1.4

                        Changes in Chess Assistant
                       =============================

1. Tree mode
	a. 'Path(s) to' window shows now the half move with its number.
	b. F6 key will reset current dataset to the whole database. Pressing
           F6 is now equivalent of the following sequence of operations:
       i) Save current tree position and current move side.
       ii) Exit tree and make current subset equal to the whole base (F6).
       iii) Enter tree mode for this new subset with previously saved
            position and move side.
	Previous function of F6 function key in Tree mode was reassigned to F7
        function key.

	c. F9 will save you dataset as current and terminate Tree mode.
	d. <Alt>+ F2/F3/F4 - will save dataset as current and move to the
           necessary mode.
	e. for quick 'playing' game for necessary position : F5/Key left/Enter
	f. '->' and '<-' work as Enter in 'Path to'/'Path from' windows.

2. Short comments shortcuts.
	In Comment mode for Short comments and special signs in Text comment
you may use special shortcuts. Be careful! Using this shortcut means that you
specify comment sign. Do not use it for move entering (F3- Knight is not the
same as <Alt><G> - Knight).
     ShortCut    Meaning
     --------    -------
	! 	 'a good move'
AltGray + 	 'White's decisive advantage'
	Alt- 	 'Black's decisive advantage'
	Alt= 	 'even'
	? 	 'a bad move'
	Alt 1 	 'an excellent move'
	Alt 2 	 'a blunder'
	Alt 3	 'deserves attention'
	Alt 4 	 'a dubious move'
	Alt 5 	 'White stands better'
	Alt 6 	 'Black stands better'
	Alt 7 'slightly better for White'
	Alt 8 'slightly better for Black'
	Alt 9 	 'unclear'
	Alt 0 	 'compensation for material'
	Alt U 	 'with attack'
	Alt R 	 'with initiative'
	Alt Y 	 'with counterplay';
	Alt Q 	 'with the idea';
	Alt W 	 'only move';
	Alt E 	 'better is';
	Alt G 	 'knight';
	Alt H 	 'bishop';
	Alt J 	 'rook';
	Alt K 	 'queen';
	Alt L 	 'king';
	Alt F	 'novelty'
	Alt A 	 'editorial comment'

3. Statistics
	a. _YearF field (in Order window) is used to specify sorting of years
           in descending order. ;
	b. <Insert key> is used to mark lines of Statistics for simple
           calculating in the Left bottom corner of window.
	c. F9 is used to forming and saving dataset according to the statistics
           line information. F2/F3/F4/F5(Alt T) are used to form dataset and
           jump to corresponding mode.
        d. Scores calculation
		1. Specify 2 items in first line of statistics order:
                      Players and Result
                2. Gather statistics
                3. Scores field will have the following meaning:
                    +  - Win(s)
                    -  - Lose(s)
                    =  - Draw(s)
                4. Use <Insert> key for marking fields and calculation of
                   final result for these fields.

4. Sorting base during extracting
	a. _YearF field is used similar to the Statistics mode;

5. List mode.
        You can now invoke Edit Header operation from list (F5) mode by
        pressing ALT-F3 key.

6. Edit mode.
        Alt-F8, Alt-F7 keys allow now to go to the next/ to the previous
        game in the edit mode.

7. CA memory limits became less. CA 1.33 needs 555K for it's
    running. If your computer has less than 555K free
    CA overlay buffer size is decreased automatically. So program
    can work even if the computer has 500K free, but of course slower.
    Program now needs to specify Files = 50 in Config.sys file for some
    operations.

8. Direct work with the database of Compact Disk (CD) drive

	CA can now view/search/comment games and manipulate datasets (save,
	load, join,extract, subtract) from CD database without its
	installation on Hard Disk (HD). This approach save yous 45/60 Mb of
	HD memory for the database of 350 000 games depending of nessesaty of
	Chess Tree Files.

	Special parameter : CD_DIRECTORY in CA.INI file determines the full
	pathname of the work directory on HD which will be used as "disk
	cash" for CD database.
	If you did not specify this parameter CA will create CD_DRIVE sub-
	directory in the CA working directory.

	CA will copy here the following files:
		Standard datasets : *.BIC, *.BIM, *.BID, *.BIS
		Comments files : *.BDY, *.DSC, *.NDX
		Library		  : *.LIB
		Tree index file   : *.BOA

	These files are copied only once when CA open CD database first
	time.
	So for the database of 350 000 games CA will use near 2.5 MB of HD
        memory.
	If there is no enough HD memory on the current disk we advise you
	to create CD_DIRECTORY on enother disk, move there all files from
        current CD_DIRECTORY and modify corresponding line in CA.INI.

	!!! Due to the low speed of CD for random access operations we advise
	 you do not use the following CA commands:

	1. Extracting database from CD to HD with sorting.
	   Extract it on HD and then sort.
	2. Findcopy on CD

	!!! Remember that all editing operation like EDit mode, deleting games,
	modifying libraries etc. are abondon for CD database.

        When you will use some operations (Print, Save as) which needs writing
        the file/s to disk you could not to find CD logical drive letter in
        disks list.

9. For the "bad" color monitor where "Dark gray" is the same as "Black" we
   add command "MonoMicroBoard = On" to CA.INI file that switches the display
   of small chess board into "color" mode.

10. You now can set any comment (Variant, Text or short) to the end (Result)
    of game in Comments mode.

11. Chess Assistant now can work with chess playing programs like Fritz2/3,
    Chess Genius 2/3, Zarkov 3.2, Hiarcs 3.0.
	1. You need to link you program to CA with Options\Chess programs setup
           command;
        2. For simple playing use F7 from Main menu
	3. For position analysis in View/Edit modes use AltF5..AltF8 keys.

	Recommended command line parameters for Chess programs calls

HIARCS 3.0

  EPD        : -E
  PGN        : -P

Mephisto Genius 2.0, Chess Genius 3.0, Fritz 2/3 - no command line parameters
