LOADING INSTRUCTIONS

GUILTY requires:

a hard disk, with 20Mb free
 an 80386 processor or faster
 at least 4Mb of RAM
 a 256-colour VGA/MCGA display

GUILTY will make special use of:

a 486 processor
extra memory above 4Mb
All major soundcards - including Ad-Lib, SoundBlaster, SoundBlaster Pro, LA-PC 1 - and your PC's internal speaker.

___________________________________________________________________
INSTALLATION

1. Change your current drive to be the drive
containing the CD ROM. For example, if your CD is in drive D, enter D:

2. Enter SETUP

3. Please note that the CD version of the game requires some storage space on your hard drive. You will be asked for the name of the directory to be used for this purpose. This directory will be referred to as the game directory and will contain your hardware configuration files as well as being the directory from which you will run the game.

4. The installation procedure now continues with the configuration of the game for various peripherals and settings. These options can be changed later by rerunning the SETUP program (see below)

___________________________________________________________________
RUNNING THE GAME

Ensure your current directory is the game directory and enter GUILTY.

OPTIONS SETUP

If you wish to change the game options that you set up during installation (such as mouse control or soundcard choice), you can do so at any time by running SETUP from the game directory.

SOUNDCARDS

Guilty uses available soundcards for:
1. An accompanying musical soundtrack
2. Digitised sampled sound (for the CD version of the game, this includes the digitised speech).

If you enable either or both of these options, you should select the appropriate soundcard that you wish the game to use.
Please note that enabling the audio options will increase the amount of Base Memory that the game requires to run. The exact amount will depend on the type of soundcards in use.

OTHER SOUNDCARDS

Guilty is compatible with a number of standard soundcards, using the Audio Interface Library system devised by Miles Design. If your soundcard is not listed in the SETUP program, but you have obtained the necessary AIL drivers for it, then you should proceed as follows:

1. Copy the new MIDI and digital drivers to files named CUSTMIDI.ADV and CUSTDIGI.ADV respectively.
2. Select the Custom Soundcard option from the SETUP soundcard lists.

ADVANCED SETTINGS

If your soundcard has not been installed to the default hardware settings, then you may need to use the SETUP program to set some of these values. Depending on the card you are using, some or all of the settings listed below may need to be defined. In all cases, details of which values you should use will be available in the soundcard manuals.
1. Base I/O Port Address: most cards default to 220.
2. Interrupt(IRQ): most cards use either 5 or 7.
3. DMA Channel: most cards use 1.
4. DMA Interrupt (DRQ): not used by most cards.

MEMORY

The game requires approximately 590K of free base memory to run, although this will increase if audio options are enabled. In order to obtain a sufficient amount of memory for the game you may be required to reconfigure your system setup. Some suggestions for how to do this are listed below. For full details of all these suggestions, please consult your DOS manual.

1. Ensure that DOS is loaded high. This will involve
using a driver such as HIMEM.SYS.

2. Reduce the number of TSR'S that are loaded, and then remain in memory. This will involve altering your CONFIG.SYS file.

3. Run a memory management utility to ensure all necessary drivers are efficiently loaded into memory.

4. Check the size of your mouse driver. If it is taking up a large amount of base memory, it may be possible for you to use a smaller driver. In extreme cases, remember that the game can be used with either a joystick or the keyboard.

5. One of the easiest solutions is often to boot up your computer from a specially prepared boot disk. This can be done as follows:

a.Format a blank floppy disk using FORMAT A:/s (assuming the floppy is in drive A:).

b.Copy across your current copies of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS that are present in the root directory of your hard drive.

c.Edit these files to remove anything that is not absolutely necessary. Remember that you may wish to keep mouse drivers, soundcard
drivers and CD-ROM drivers.

d. When you switch on your PC to play the
game, ensure that this disk is used to boot
   your PC.

EXTENDED MEMORY

Guilty requires at least 3 MB of Extended Memory (XMS). If more is available, then the game will make use of this to ensure maximum performance.

If less than 3MB of XMS is available then the game will halt with a warning message. This should inform you that it is possible to continue running the game by entering GUILTY/x-. However you should be prepared for a slight loss in the smoothness of some of the animated sequences.

Please note that any extra memory in your PC can be set up as Extended or Expanded, depending on the memory drivers present. The inclusion of the HIMEM.SYS driver in your CONFIG.SYS file will
normally ensure that Extended Memory has been set up. The game will only detect Extended Memory, so please check the set-up of your
system. Consult your DOS manual for further details.

MEMORY/DISK CACHING SYSTEMS

We advise against running the game with any disk caching drivers active. This is not because of incompatibility, but because the caches
invariably use extra memory that the game can use far more efficiently.

___________________________________________________________________
ERROR MESSAGES

If the game prematurely exits, one of the
following error messages should be shown.

Unable to open file

1.Check the game is being run from within the directory into which it was installed (the game directory). The current default directory must contain all the files that the game needs (except if the game CD-ROM is present in the CD drive).

2.Ensure that the CONFIG.SYS file contains a high enough setting of the FILES variable.

The CONFIG.SYS file that is present in the root directory of your hard drive probably contains a line that has the form FILES=xx where xx is a number. Please ensure that this number is at least 20. If you have a network or certain other drivers active, you may have to increase this number.

3.It is possible that the required file has been deleted or damaged. Try re-installing the game.

Not enough base memory

See the advice given above about the amount of Base Memory needed to run the game and how to increase the amount of memory available.

Critical Error

There may be corrupt files present on your disk drive. Check the integrity of your drive, possibly by running CHKDSK, a virus checker, or a disk analyser, and then try re-installing the game.

Unable to install sound driver.

The game was unable to detect the soundcard as dictated by the soundcard drivers and the
hardware settings chosen in the SETUP program. See the Soundcard advice given above and run the SETUP program to change the settings as appropriate.

IN GAME ERRORS

The Interspective System that has been used to create this game has a complex in game error checking facility to determine any hardware incompatibilities that occur during gameplay. In some cases hitting the SPACE bar as detailed on the screen after such an error may allow the game to recover. If you see any errors during the game, please contact Psygnosis quoting the error details seen on screen.

PLAYING GUILTY

INTRODUCTION

Although intimate knowledge of the Federation Police Files contained in the fold out insert isn't essential to success in the game, you might like to read them anyway. This is not because our sources inside the Federation Police HQ went to great lengths to secure these documents, or because we would feel deeply upset if you didn't at least skim over the information they contain. The truth is, they are quite useful. Not only do they give you some idea of the principle characters involved in the action, they also reveal some minor clues about the plot.

OK. Whether or not you read the files, this is a brief overview of what you have to do.
GUILTY gives you a choice of two characters:
Jack T. Ladd (a thief) and Ysanne Andropath
(a Federation Policewoman). Jack, recently escaped from prison, has been caught red-handed by Andropath during a raid on a dairy truck. At the start of the game, both are aboard the Federation Police ship, Relentless, and Andropath is about to escort Jack back to the prison planet.
If you choose to play Jack, your initial objective is to escape Ysanne's clutches. If you choose Ysanne, your primary mission is to bring Jack to justice.

Whichever character you select first, once you've completed the game play it again with the other character. Ysanne and Jack offer unique
perspectives on the action, with different plots, puzzles, solutions and styles. Only when you have played both characters' roles can you decide who is telling the truth.

THE ANIMATION SEQUENCE

The introductory animation sequence will show you some of the events which occurred just before the start of your involvement in the action. After you've watched it, you can press ESC to skip it in the future.

THE MAIN GAME SCREEN

A. PLAYING AREA	B. CONTROL PANEL

1. JACK T. LADD	7. MAP
2. YSANNE ANDROPATH	8. CONTROL ICONS
3. CURSOR	9. INVENTORY
4. CHARACTER
5. OBJECT
6. EXIT

A. PLAYING AREA
This is where the action takes place. There are scores of locations in the game, and you should find the following elements in all of them. However, there will be several occasions during the game when events overtake you. All you can do is sit back and watch - but pay attention!
NB: On this screen, clicking on the left mouse button activates the currently selected icon, clicking on the right scrolls through all the
available icons.

JACK T. LADD
Jack hasn't got an honest bone in his body. He is always on the run from someone or something. He thinks, looks, acts, talks, walks, breathes, eats and sleeps like a thief.

YSANNE ANDROPATH
Federation Policewoman Andropath is an honest, hardworking agent of the law. She has one important character trait which occasionally clouds her professional judgement: she despises men.

CURSOR
This is used both in the playing area and the control panel. Clicking on the right mouse button scrolls through the available icons, clicking on the left mouse button activates the chosen icon. Rolling the cursor over the playing area reveals objects and features with which you can interact. NB: The specific icons which can be used on a particular object or part of the screen are animated in the icon control panel.

CHARACTER
There are plenty of other characters in the game, many of them willing to offer information if you ask the right questions. Some of them are more helpful than others - but talk to them all.

OBJECT
There are dozens of objects in the game, not all of them immediately useful. Whether or not you can use an object depends on whether you have chosen to play Jack or Ysanne.

To pick up an item, left-click on it in Take mode (the closed hand icon). The cursor will transform into the object you have picked up. You can now use this on another character/object, or place it in your inventory.

EXIT
Once you have used them, available exits are shown on the map in the control panel. If you don't want to use the map to move around, select the Move icon and left-click on the exit.

B. CONTROL PANEL

This is divided up into three sections. As before, clicking on the right mouse button scrolls through the available icons, clicking on the left mouse button performs a variety of functions, detailed below.

MAP
This shows an overhead view of your current
location. Select an exit on the playing screen and a corresponding arrow appears on the map. When you revisit the location, you can select that exit again by simply clicking on the arrow on the map - as long as you are using the Move icon. This feature is most useful when you want to travel through locations without stopping, or when you can't immediately see the exit you want in the playing area.

CONTROL ICONS

There are three ways to select the various control icons:
* With the mouse in the playing area (left-click activates the icon, right-click scrolls through the available list),
* With the mouse in the control panel (left-click on the box of control icons to make your choice), or
* With the keyboard (see SUMMARY OF CONTROLS, below).

TAKE
In this mode, clicking on an object in the playing area or in your Inventory causes it to be picked up, and your cursor is replaced by a larger
version of the object. This item can then be dropped by clicking on the playing area or your Inventory. If one object is dropped onto another, the two can sometimes be connected. An object may be given to a character by dropping it onto that character.

USE
Clicking with this icon on a part of the scenery or an object allows you to use it. If the item can be used immediately, the effect occurs
immediately without further action from you; if the object is usable on another item, the cursor changes to an appropriate Using icon. By moving this icon onto another object, you can make the two interact.

MOVE
When in Move mode, if you click the pointer on a part of the scenery you will walk over to it, and if it is an exit you will walk through it. Remember that you can also use this mode to click on the arrows on the Map, allowing you to move through locations quickly.

LOOK
This provides textual information on the objects you examine.

OBJECT-IN-USE ICON
Some objects, such as the fire
extinguisher and the knife, can be transformed into icons which appear in the `blank' box in the icon control panel. To find out if an item is usable in this way, select the USE icon and click on an object in your inventory.

TALK
Dialogue between Jack or Ysanne and other characters in the game is achieved by clicking on the Talk icon and using this on the character you want to talk to. This accesses the Dialogue screen, shown above. Once a character has spoken to you, you are given a choice of replies - and you should left-click on the response you think most appropriate. If the character has a lot to say, you can speed through his/her/its response by clicking on the right mouse button, or by using the TAB key.
You will gain most of your information this way - so be patient!

In special instances a character may initiate the conversation by walking up to you and talking. In this case you may be able to choose whether you talk to them or not (allowing you to do something else first), or you may simply be forced to talk to them (taking you automatically to the Dialogue screen). Unfortunately, sometimes what you think is not always what you end up saying...

STATUS MENU
This is selected by left-clicking on the icon in the box in the control panel, or by pressing the SPACE BAR. The status menu provides details about your progress, game options, credits, control options (such as recalibrating the joystick, mouse speed, etc.), help, and saving and loading games (99 slots for each).
These are mostly self-explanatory, although the Non-Event Detection in the Game Options list needs further explanation. Basically, Jack or Ysanne will make a comment if you are unable to use an icon on an object or part of the screen. If these comments annoy you, the Non-Event Detection option allows you to switch them off.

INVENTORY
Your inventory can hold an infinite number of objects: everything you collect is displayed here. To pick up an item, switch to Take mode and left-click on the chosen object. The small icons in the bar on the right allow greater control over your inventory. The triangles at the top and
bottom of the bar allow you to snap up to the top of the inventory and snap down to the
bottom. The arrow icons allow you to scroll up and down one pixel at a time. The central icon (a square consisting of nine dots) automatically arranges your items into neat rows - very useful when things get cluttered. There are keyboard short-cuts for all these controls.

SUMMARY OF CONTROLS

MOUSE

LEFT BUTTON
Selects objects (in Take or Use mode), activates icons, and is used to interact with the background scenery. It is also used to specify locations on the map (in Move mode).

RIGHT BUTTON
Scrolls through the available icons. Speeds through conversations on the Talk screen.

HELP! I'M STUCK!

This is a guide to the first few steps of the quest. It will give you an idea about how the game works without revealing too much about the puzzles you'll face. You should only read it if you can't figure out how to do anything!

___________________________________________________________________
PLAYING JACK...
Jack starts the game in a cell aboard the space ship, Relentless. The only thing he can do is reach the light switch to the right of the cell door. To escape, select the USE icon and left-click on the switch three times, until it breaks. When the maintenance robot returns, TALK to it and tell it to fix the light. When it opens the door, you can simply walk out.
If you're stuck for something to do after that, bear in mind that Ysanne wants to return you to the prison planet as quickly as possible - so you could make life difficult for her. Reading the files contained in the fold out insert will also help...

PLAYING YSANNE...
Ysanne is free to explore the Relentless. She can TALK to the ship's computer to find out vital information, and USE the console on the bridge.
The emergency transmission from Federation HQ will give you more clues about what to do - but,
basically, her first job will be to visit the mining colony on the nearest planet and get fuel.

AND IN GENERAL...

Talk to people, but try to charm them first. If charm doesn't work you can be as sarcastic as you like. Try to work out what the other characters in the game are like from their appearance and behaviour, and treat them accordingly.

Return objects to their rightful owners, unless you can find a better use for them. Maps, weapons and money are very handy possessions indeed.

Some objects have several uses, whether alone or combined.

 Try everything: you can't die!

And remember: only the tough survive, and only the inquisitive succeed. (If you're neither tough nor inquisitive, sheer stupidity often helps.)
