PROBLEM: THE PROGRAM DOES NOT LOAD CORRECTLY

* Have you got the right equipment as specified by the instructions
  in the configuration's section?
Check all parts of your configuration by using the installation
programs supplied with each item of equipment.

* Are special peripherals fitted to your system? Try to disconnect
these peripherals, reinitialize the computer and reload the program.

PROBLEM: THE MESSAGE "Minimum RAM = 540Kbytes" APPEARS

* Do you actually have more than 540Kbytes free memory under DOS?
To check, run the utility MEM or type the instruction CHKDSK. These
two small programs will tell you how many free bytes there are in RAM.
  N.B.: 1 Kbytes = 1024 bytes.

* To solve problems of insufficient memory, you can try

1) to optimize the memory,

2) to suppress resident programs and create a minimum boot disk.

1) To optimize memory.
- If you have a QEMM program (if you have it will appear in CONFIG.SYS),
on the DOS command line, type the command OPTIMIZE and press RETURN.
If you have the program EMM386 and if you are using MS-DOS 6.0 or higher,
type the command MEMMAKER and press RETURN.
These two programs reorganize the memory by trying to create as much space
  as possible.

2) Do you have resident programs in RAM? Calculators, clocks, cache memory
and disk drive accelerators are all programs which may be resident in
memory. These programs are sometimes loaded automatically when to turn on
the computer, via the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
To suppress these resident programs, we advise you to create a minimum
boot disk which you will use every time you wish to load the game SMURF.

PROBLEM: THE MESSAGES "Minimum EMS = 512Kbytes" OR "No EMS" APPEAR

* Do you actually have more than 512Kbytes EMS?
To check, run the utility MEM. This program will tell you how many EMS
  bytes there are.
  N.B.: 1 Kbytes = 1024 bytes.

* If you don't have any or insufficient EMS memory and you are not using
QEMM, check that the program EMM386.exe is in the CONFIG.SYS file.
To do this, use the text editor EDIT (EDIT CONFIG.SYS). The following
line should appear in the listing:
  DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
  Save the new CONFIG.SYS

MINIMUM BOOT

Insert a floppy blank disk in drive A:
Type the command FORMAT A: /S
Copy the programs AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS from your hard disk onto the
floppy disk (copy C:\ copy AUTOEXEC.BAT A:).

Using "Edit", the DOS text editor, edit both programs AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS (E.G. C:\EDIT A:AUTOEXEC.BAT).

In each of the two programs, suppress the commands you think are unnecessary
by putting them into remarks (REM).

Keep the commands for the MOUSE, keyboard (KEYB UK,KEYBOARD), the manager
MSCDEX, the CD-ROM drive (CD), sound card (SOUND BLASTER), and EMS (EMM386).
You can put SMARTDRIVE, SIDEKICK etc. into remarks.

Then turn off the computer and switch on again with the minimum BOOT disk
in the drive. The computer will start on the disk and release the maximum
memory possible.

Run the game and load it as specified in the paragraph "Running from DOS".
N.B.: Unfortunately it is impossible for us to provide you with an
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS listing which is certain to function with your
equipment, because each personal computer is different.

PROBLEM: NO SOUND, NO MUSIC OR QUALITY POOR

THE MESSAGE "Problems associated with sound card" APPEARS
Your card may have been incorrectly installed. The following line must be
present in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file executed when your computer is switched
on:

SET BLASTER = ...

The end of the line depends on your sound card and your computer.
So that this line can be written correctly, you will need to have executed
the installation program supplied with your card. Refer to your card
documentation to find out its name and how to execute it.

PROBLEM : THE VIDEOS APPEAR SLOW OR JERKY

- Do you have the right equipment in accordance with the instructions
contained in the Configuration Requirements Section ?
You should have a CD-ROM drive with a data-transmission speed of
  at least 150K per second.

If you notice that this rate is lower than the rate that your CD-ROM drive
should produce (in accordance with the indications given in your CD-ROM
drive manual), carry out the following checks:
- Are you using a portable SCSI interface connected to the printer port?
If so, it generally reduces the transfer rate.
- Is your CD-ROM drive correctly installed? In particular, check
the interrupt numbers (IRQ) and the port numbers.
- Is your CD-ROM driver correctly installed?
To check it, refer to the MSCDEX. The MSCDEX is a program normally installed
by a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. It allows DOS to communicate with your
CD-ROM drive and provides a buffer memory that allows faster access to the
data contained in the various directories of your CD-ROM. To change the
amount of buffer memory, use the option "/M:xx". We recommend that you
choose xx = 15 to optimise access to the data contained on your CD-ROM and
to obtain a perfect flow in the animation sequences.

PROBLEM : THE MESSAGE : "Read error on CD-ROM.

Probably the disk is not
correctly inserted.
(A) Abandon and quit the program
(R) Retry
(I) Ignore"

APPEARS

Your disk may be dirty.
Take it out of the drive and clean it with a dry, clean, soft and
lint-free cloth, wiping in a straight line starting from the centre
outwards to the edge of the disk.
Never clean your disk with a solvent or abrasive agent.
