III. Technical Suggestions and Tips
-------------------------------------------------------------------

* Prior to beginning Fast Attack in Windows 95, please turn off any
screen saver programs that may be running on your computer.
Screen savers may cause game play problems.

* If you are running Fast Attack in Windows 95 under the 16-color
mode, you may not task switch from Fast Attack to another Windows
  application.

* If your computer displays distorted graphics after the opening
movie you will need to edit the FAST.INI file that was created in
the directory in which you installed Fast Attack. The default
installation directory is c:\sierra\fast. Modify the line in the
fast.ini file that reads "DELAYVGA=OFF" to read "DELAYVGA=ON".
  Save your changes.

* If you would like to disable the AUTORUN feature, just hold down
the SHIFT key while you insert the Fast Attack CD-ROM disc.

IV. PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
-------------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION:
In Windows 95 DOS MODE, my sound card is not found when I run the
auto detect program.

ANSWER:
Your system may not have the proper drivers for DOS MODE. You may
need to contact your hardware manufacture for the proper drivers
for your sound card.

QUESTIONS:
I am getting error messages that says I don't have enough memory.

ANSWER:
First, make sure your system has enough physical memory to run the
game. To make sure, type 'MEM' at a DOS prompt. If the total
memory on the system is 8,192 KB or more then your system meets the
minimum system requirements for Fast Attack.

If your system has enough physical memory and you are still
receiving messages stating that you don't have enough memory then
disable animation in the preferences menu in the game.

Another option is to make a bootdisk. Please refer to section VI
'Making a Bootdisk' for instructions on how to make a bootdisk.

QUESTION:
While I am playing the game in Windows 95 the game randomly
locks-up.

ANSWER:
Your sound card configuration may be conflicting with the game.
 - Click on the START button, select SHUTDOWN.
 - Click on RESTART IN DOS MODE.
 - Start the game from the DOS environment.

Another option that will work around the problem in Windows 95 is
to disable all sound in the Fast Attack Config program.

QUESTION:
The Auto detect program during the sound card setup doesn't detect
MIDI on my system.

ANSWER:
You must manually select the MIDI device for your system. If you
are unsure on which device your system supports, contact your sound
card manufacturer.

QUESTION:
When I start the game I receive a message 'Vesa Function Not
Found'.

ANSWER:
Your system doesn't have a VESA driver loaded. Contact your Video
Card manufacturer the appropriate VESA driver for your system.
We have also included a Share-ware version of a VESA driver on the
CD. Try loading the driver and see if it works on you computer
system. For VESA installation instructions, review the readme
file in the VESA directory.

QUESTION:
I receive the following error message: "Error Allocating Memory to
SMK". How do I work around this problem?

ANSWER:
There are two options you can try:
1) Disable the movie playback sequences in the preferences options.
2) Try creating a bootdisk. If you are running under MS-DOS,
Sierra has included a bootdisk creator utility. Simply go to
the CD prompt and type: BOOTDISK.BAT <ENTER>.

QUESTION:
When I run an Auto detection for my sound card the system locks up
or I get a system crash.

ANSWER:
Manually select your sound card for Sound Blaster.

QUESTION:
When I attempt to start the game, the computer reports the
following error message:

V. CORRECTIONS IN THE MANUAL AND ADDITIONAL GAME INFORMATION
-------------------------------------------------------------------

* In EASY mode, targets with a primary or secondary sink objective
are automatically assigned to available ATF trackers. These should
be the first targets to be fired upon. As these targets are sunk
and removed from thegame, ATF trackers become available and are
then refilled with other targets having a primary or secondary sink
objective.

* Page 48 of the manual incorrectly states that clicking on the
arrows in the Helm screen or using the keyboard arrow keys will
change depth, course, or speed by 2 feet/degrees/knots. These
controls change the values by 1 foot/degree/knot. Using the RIGHT
mouse button, depth and course can be
changed by 10 feet/degrees.

* Page 62 of the manual concerning the Interval readout on the
WLR9 Acoustic Intercept Receiver can be misleading. Active sonar
normally searches on a selected range scale of typically 4000 yds,
10000 yds, or 20000 yds. This means the sonar will send out
another sound pulse after sufficient time has elapsed for the
previous pulse to go out to the end of the search range and return.

The speed of sound in water is about 4800 feet/sec (1600 yds/sec).
Therefore it takes 2 seconds for the sound to go out to 1600 yds
and return. So for every second that elapses between the outgoing
pulse and hearing the return echo, the range is 800 yards. When
the sonar operator hears a return echo, he probably would perform
two tasks:

1) Shift to the shortest possible range scale to allow
him to get more frequent range information on the target.

2) Switch his sonar to the "range gate" mode. In the "range gate"
mode, the sonar automatically send out another pulse as soon as
   the echo is heard.

These characteristics can be useful. If the contact stays in a
long range scale, it is likely that he does not have contact on
you. On the other hand, if the contact should start to range gate,
you can be 95% sure he has contact and is moving in for an attack.
The WLR9 interval can tell you the range ONLY IF THE CONTACT IS
RANGE GATING. Multiply the displayed interval by 800 to get the
range in yards. You can then enter that range into Fire Control
to initiate a preemptive attack.

* More on torpedo evasion: Have a evasion device loaded. Initially
go deep and to maximum speed; launch an evasion device and reload.
Use the WLR9 to determine if the torpedo is range gating. If not,
you have time to get out of the torpedoes detection cone. You can
estimate the torpedo's course to be the reciprocal of the initial
detection bearing, and then form a picture of the detection cone.
Turn to take the shortest way out of the cone. If the torpedo is
range gating, turn away and try to out run it. Changing depth
across the layer may be effective. Good Luck! When you play again
remember: it is far better to remain undetected then to try an
evade torpedoes.

* If you try and perform an EMERGENCY DEEP while you are on the
surface, you will not dive. The Los Angeles Class Submarines do
not allow an emergence dive from the surface so this feature was
built into the game to ensure realism. If you want to dive fast,
you must ring the engines up to full speed.
