The Effort Level of your horse will be displayed during the race in the upper
left portion of the screen. Note that you will have to press the right arrow
key several times before your horse reaches the next Effort Level. This is
because @15there are sublevels within each Effort Level. @7 When your horse
is going all out for maximum speed, Effort Level will show as 5.

THINGS TO AVOID:

1. Do not ask your horse to go all out at maximum speed for more than 1/4 to
3/8 mile. Going all out uses up the horse's energy at a very fast rate.
Your horse will likely tire badly in the homestretch if you start your
all out drive to the finish too soon.

2. Do not run up on the heels of a horse in front of you or try to move into
a lane where another horse is running. This may cause your horse to slow
down sharply and lose ground as well as momentum. The message "BLOCKED!"
will appear at the top of the screen if this occurs.

3. Do not get caught too wide on the turns as you lose ground depending on how
far wide your horse runs. You can tell when you are on a turn or approach-
ing one by observing the miniature oval track at the bottom right of the
screen. In addition, for most Adapter modes, the inside rail or fence will
turn yellow when you are on a turn.

To summarize, your primary challenges as a jockey are:

   1. Know your horse's abilities and preferences,

   2. Anticipate the strategy of your competition,

   3. Be able to judge how fast the leaders are running,

   4. Save ground on turns, and

   5. Avoid getting blocked in traffic.

You will not win every race, but if you ride well so as to allow your mounts
to perform their best, you will win more than your share of races.
