=============================================================================
             Mapping Hints and Suggestions
=============================================================================

Parallax
Parallax uses a concept of "one free layer" and the rest have to be
copied to scroll. Meaning that whichever layer currently has the most
gfx "area" on it is scrolled by just moving the screen memory pointer
in vga memory and the other parallax layers have to have all of their
gfx area (rectangles) copied in order to scroll. That means that if you
put lots of rectangles of large area on more than one layer at any
given spot, the frame rate will drop dramatically. That's why you see
areas where i have put most of the gfx on one layer, and then put lots
of long thin gfx (pipes, wood planks, etc.) on the other layers.
This gives maximum 3D effect with minimum frame rate penalty.

Memory usage
Try not to make LOTS of different scaled bg images. It's ok to scale
them, but try to reuse those new scaled images over and over. Every
scaled image takes up THAT amount of memory, even if it is derived
from one original image and even if it's only on pixel wider or
taller than another. Same goes for brightened and darkened images.

Any object (monster, trap, etc.) requires it's imagery to be in
memory, so try not to use "one of everything" or the game will try to
load EVERTHING into memory, and it definately won't fit.
Same goes for bg gfx files. If you use even just ONE little stone
from a bg gfx file (i.e. 00worlda.lbm), the game will load ALL of
the gfx from that file. Try not to use imagery from zillions of
	different bg gfx files.
Transporter/Door exits
Put the arrows on the door exits (marker) right on the top of
the floor surface and nikita will not hop when she
	comes out.

Multiple Exits
It's OK to make a map have separate paths leading to different
portal exits so that it's possible to find a different exit each
	time it is played.

Secret areas
Mappers: try to put a LOT of secret stuff into the maps.
Things like hidden access ways which lead you to secret rooms,
where you might find a stronger weapon, or a full-health prize.

There should be approximately as much secret stuff as normal stuff
	in any one level.
The secret stuff MUST not be required to complete the level.
It is only bonus stuff which you might find or you might not.

You can also hide stuff behind rocks and shrubs.
Unless they are made "secret" objects though, they won't show up
in the "secret prizes" count at the end of the level.

Amulets
There should be EXACTLY ONE amulet per level. They should NOT be
too difficult to find. The amulet type for each level is in the
	"Level Info" table.

Bosses
The boss monsters are placed in the table where they need to appear in
the level layout. The magic spell type that is won from each boss
	monster is shown in parenthesis.
Boss monsters all have a "boss" argument which needs to be set to 1 if
it's on the level in which it first appears. You can use the same boss
monster on levels AFTER that but you should set the "boss" var to 0.
There should be exactly one boss on the first level of appearance
and its "boss" arg should be set to 1. For example, the Gralob
should NEVER appear before level 9. It should appear exactly ONCE
at the end of level 9 with a "boss" var of 1. After that, it can
appear again and it can appear multiple times or in groups, but
should always have a "boss" var of 0 if it does.

Save points
Each of the maps should have a save-signpost very near where Nikita
first appears in the map. There should then be approximately 3 to 6
more save spots in various places around the map. Put save-signposts
immediately after any particularly difficult areas. Try to keep
signposts AWAY from other objects in the map, like monsters, doors,
elevators, traps etc. Suggest making small rooms off the main map
containing nothing other than a save-signpost and possible a
sanctuary spirit which is reachable by an up-door (not a jump-door
because monsters can pass through jump-doors).

Misc.
Put the green arrow for an up-door or jump-door entrance right
down on the floor (use F12 to see collision rectangles).
If it's too high, Nikita might not be able to enter the
door if she is shrunk, or crawling.
Follow the "first appearance" list for monsters and other objects list.

Habitually "tie" together (t key in editor) any convex corners on
floors so that nikky can't fall though them.

Ring all maps with an outside surface box (or if it's a really big map,
just follow the contours of the map with surfaces which are about 1/2
screen beyond the normal surfaces) so that things don't get "zapped"
(jump to Nik's pos when they hit the edges of the world).

Darken bg gfx which are further away or closer (or are meant to
	appear that way).

Use the "Introductory blubs" story as a guide to the
appearance of the levels, and what they contain generally.

=============================================================================
             Introductory blurbs
=============================================================================
These are the little story blurbs that appear before playing each level.
The "Theme" section gives a description of the level for the mapper to
use as a guide to creating the bg imagery.
The "LBM's" section specifies which .lbm files should probably be used
most heavily in the level's bg imagery.

	Episode 1
	Level 1
	"Trapped in the Dungeon"

As Nikita explores the ruins of Castle
Drofanayrb, she stumbles into a trap which
sends her straight to the dank and smelly
dungeons.
Bats and darkness are everywhere. An
air of death and despair permeate the walls.
The bones of people and animals are strewn
about the rooms and hallways. Or are they the
sad remains of the victims of Drofanayrb's
awful experiments?

Theme: Standard dungeon, bats, bones
LBM's: 29

	Episode 1
	Level 2
	"Laboratory of Evil"

Having found a way out of the dungeons,
Nikita makes her way up a short, irregular

hellish laboratory filled with all kinds of
strange and fantastic objects and devices.
Why was the laboratory so close to the
dungeons? Yuck!

Theme: Evil lab where experiments are done on dungeon prisoners.

The Laboratory gives onto a tiny stone
passage opening into a huge system of
caverns covered with beautiful shining
crystals.
It's as wondrous place, but VERY confusing.
"How can I get out of this crazy place?",
Nikita thinks to herself.
Suddenly, her acute wolf-ears detect a very
strange sound.
"Sounds like trouble. I think I'd better
watch my step!"
Too true. Nik's gonna face her first
real test in these caverns. But the reward
for victory is MAGIC!

Theme: Caverns with crystalline formations leading from the lab to the castle.
LBM's: 69

	Episode 1
	Level 4

Victory over the Crazyskull! Nikita has
passed her first test of fire and acquired the
ability to cast the precious 'Stinger Spell'.
Provided she has the mana of course.
Hmm. What's this? Looks like some sort of
storage area. There is still some working
machinery in the storage rooms, so be careful
not to get injured by the moving parts.
Wow! Look at all the useful treasures and
weapons!

Theme: Lower castle level. Used for storage. Misc junk, lots of and rats.
LBM's: 20 30 29

series of chambers and hallways. Eery echos
roll up and down the long passages.
Bizarre devices, hidden passages ... it's
easy to get lost in this perplexing mess.
   Drofanayrb's equipment is broken, corroded,
overgrown. Yet a strange energy still seems
to inhabit this place. Residual life force
from the Gralob? Nawww! Probably just fleas.
   What's that crashing noise?

Theme: Misc. castle hallways
LBM's: 29 20

	Episode 1
	Level 6
	"Gallery of Death"

Drofanayrb's gallery. It seems that evil
genius does not breed good taste! The mad
wizard appears to have been something of an
art collector.
Nikita's wolf-spirit is not comfortable here.
In fact, her wolf-spirit feels very much like
it wants to vomit!
Giant mana-sucking slugs present a new danger.
Her ability to transform and fight as a wolf
could be in jeopardy. Watch out for 'em!
Oh .. and watch out for the security guard
in the gallery. He's mucho mean and packing
heat. Nik really ought to take that weapon away
from the boy before he hurts somebody.

gotten out of that sickening castle.
"Home Sweet Home, eh Drofanayrb?", she
muses as she lopes through the main gates
of the castle and gives it one final look.
Across the bridge to the north, she finds
the remains of an abandoned village. Not a
large one by any means, but at least it was
inhabited by ordinary folk.

	with plants. Blue sky

village, Nikita enters an area which is hot,
humid and plenty stinky. Something alive is
here and she knows just what it is.
Something large and hungry and going by the
name of Gralob! Left behind to protect
Drofanayrb's castle no doubt.
She focuses her senses and energies. The
many years of mental and physical training
gathering inside her. She prepares for the
showdown!

screeching menace awaiting her,
she'll make off with one of her
enemies' most powerful weapon to
use against him!

Nikita.

beautiful and yet so ... hey! What's
this?"

Theme: Rocks, stone caves, large pit area where Nik fights Tarcac.
LBM's: 03

Now, Nikky must traverse the Sun
Caves. A complicated network of

Nikita chuckles.
"Now then, enough of this foolishness.
I'm gonna take down your leader, The
Claws! Where can I find him? Not
talking, eh? No worries. I think
I know the way."

been busy here, eh?".
Nikita enters an area of obviously
artificial construction. A very
'unnatural' formation.
"I'm glad I don't have to pay rent

LBM's: 31 30 29
