1.0 THE STORY SO FAR
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Up until a few months ago, everything had been going just fine. The
world as we know it was ruled by the powerful Corbett Alliance, a peaceful
system of government. Taxes and interest rates were low, average income was
high, and people were content with the way things were being run. Things
were looking good.
Then, the Corbett Alliance suffered a massive defeat at the battle of Eeid.
Morale fell, confusion grew, one part of the Alliance did not know what other
parts were doing, and there was suddenly not enough manpower to maintain the
massive infrastructure of the Alliance. Things started to crumble. Taxes
were raised in an attempt to gain more capital to rebuild the failing
government, but this only angered the people. Many refused to pay their
taxes, and there were not enough law enforcement officers to keep everyone
in line.
To make matters worse, a small group of rebels within the Alliance formed
a splinter group known as the Sabishii Empire. They claimed to be able to
rule better than the old Corbett Alliance. The Sabishii Empire started to
gather more and more followers, and a civil war broke out. At first the
Alliance thought it would be an easy task to quell this rebellion, but the
Sabishii forces were cunning and underhanded. They stole leading edge
military technology and recruited or paid off all of the Alliance's strategic
army personnel. The war raged on for several months, costing countless lives.
Now, a new enemy has begun to appear on the fields of battle. Neither side
knows where this enemy comes from or what they want, but they attack on sight
and they have technology that is equal to or greater than anything known.
Both the Corbett Alliance and the Sabishii Empire have started to refer to
this unkown race as "The Intruders." Now a three-way war exists, and no one
is certain who will dominate and who will be destroyed...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.0 OVERVIEW
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Intrusion" is a game that combines both strategy and action. The player
chooses his allegiance... you may choose to ally yourself either with
the Sabishii Empire or the Corbett Alliance. Sabishii units have greater
firepower than Corbett units, as they are masters of attack. Corbett units
have much better armor than Sabishii units, as they are masters of defense.

2.1 INSTALLATION AND SETUP
To install the game, simply unzip the "intrude.zip" file into its own
directory. To save disk space, you may then erase the intrude.zip file, as
it is no longer needed. Or, if you prefer, copy it onto a floppy disk and
store it somewhere for safe keeping.
Before you can run the game you need to run the setup program. To do this,
type SETUP at the dos prompt while in your Intrude directory. You will then
be prompted to enter your sound card parameters. If you have no sound card,
just select "no sound card." If you don't know what your sound card
parameters are, refer to the owner's manual of your card.

2.2 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
You must have an IBM compatible 486 66Mhz machine (or better, preferably
better) in order to play the game. A Pentium is highly recommended. The
game was designed to run under DOS, but also runs fine under Windows 95.
You need a Microsoft compatible mouse installed. The game does not use
EMS or XMS, so it does not matter how much ram you have, as long as you have
at least 560 or so Kb of conventional memory. If you wish to hear sound,
music, and speech, you will need a sound card (Sound Blaster/Pro/16 or Gravis
Ultrasound are supported, but other cards, like the PAS, will work if they
can do SB emulation).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.0 THE MAIN MENU
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the game is installed and set up, type INTRUDE to begin. This will
take you to the main menu. From here you can view the introduction to
the game (this is really just a condensed version of section 1.0 above).
You can also start a new game, load a previously saved game, or view the
program credits. Use the arrow keys to highlight a choice and press enter
to select it. The escape key will almost always act as a cancel button if
you get somewhere you don't want to be. To exit the program, select QUIT or
press escape.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.0 SELECTING YOUR ALLEGIANCE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you are ready to play, select START from the main menu. This will
take you to the allegiance screen, where you can select which group you
wish to pledge loyalty to. You can choose to be a part of the Sabishii
Empire or the Corbett Alliance.
If you choose the Sabishii Empire, all your combat units will have enhanced
firepower. This is because the Sabishii Empire specializes in attack rather
than defense. The Corbett Empire, on the other hand, has an armor bonus for
all of its units, because they place more emphasis on defense.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.0 PLAYING THE GAME
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right after you select your allegiance, you will see the first story
screen come up. You will see a story screen before you begin every level.
To skip it and start the game, press any key. The game from this point
is divided into two sections: the combat section and the strategy section.
These are both complicated, so they will be explained separately.

5.1 THE STRATEGY SECTION
Now you will find yourself with an overhead view of the battle map. Your
units will either be blue or red, depending on your allegiance. (Sabishii
units are red, Corbett units are blue). To scroll the map around, move the
mouse to any edge of the screen. Level one has a very small map, so you
won't have to scroll much.
The object of the strategy section is to eliminate all enemy units from
the map. This is much easier if you can find a few factories to capture
so that you can build more units to help you, but more on that later. Once
all enemy units are destroyed, you move on to the next level. There
are nine levels in the game.
The strategy section is turn-based. That means that the game plays kind
of like chess, but not exactly. First, you take your time and move all
your units into position. Then you click END TURN. Now it is the computer's
turn and he will move all his units around, and pass the turn back to you,
and so on until one of you is defeated.

  5.1a) MOVING UNITS
To select a unit, click on it. You will hear a response from the unit
(if you have a sound card), and a bunch of boxes will appear around the
unit. These are movement boxes, they show where you can move the unit to.
To move that unit, click on the movement box of your choice. You can not
move outside that vehicle's range. As you move, you will see the unit's
radius of movement decrease until you can not move that unit any more.
Don't panic, it's just out of movement points. Once you have moved all
your units around, click END TURN and the enemy will move his units around.
After that, all movement points are restored and you can start moving again.
If you click on a unit and then decide you don't really want to move
that unit, then you can either press the right mouse button (this will
deselect the current unit), or you can click on a different unit.

  5.1b) BUILDING UNITS
There are only two kinds of units capable of capturing factories: the
APC and the flying APC. If you have one such unit, move it on to a
neutral factory and you will capture that factory. From then on, you will
receive one factory point for every factory you own per turn. You can use
these factory points to build new units, but beware, there is a limit
to the number of units you can have active at any given time. This limit
may vary from level to level.

  5.1c) MISCELLANEOUS
There are a few buttons at the bottom of the screen that are worth
mentioning. At the bottom left of the screen you will see a graphical
display of the current song (if you have a sound card). If you click
on this you will see a menu pop up where you can change the current
song that is playing or stop the music if you don't care to hear it
anymore. You can also adjust the volume here.
The OPTIONS button will bring up a list of options that are fairly
self-explanatory. You can set the scroll speed of the map to suit your
computer's speed, you can change the difficulty level, and you can
change the song that is played during combat scenes. You can also save
your game from this menu. The button labelled SURRENDER will end the
game and take you back to the main menu.
To exit the options menu, click RESUME. This will take you back to the
strategy section main screen. There is one final button to explain. In
the bottom right there is a window that is empty at first. Once you click
on a unit, a picture of that unit will appear along with two indicators.
The green indicator shows how much armor, or health, that unit has left.
The blue indicator shows how much movement that vehicle has left this turn.
If you click on this window you will see a screen of information about
this unit, showing the unit's firepower, inertia, speed, and so on. This
may or may not be interesting to you.

5.2 THE COMBAT SECTION
You will notice that when you move one of your units next to an enemy
unit, the enemy unit will have a red glowing box around it. This means that
if you click in the red box, you will enter combat mode. Be sure to match
up your units properly (i.e., don't try attacking an enemy battleship with
just a puny jeep). Once you click in the red box, the screen will fade
out and you will enter the combat section.

  5.2a) MOVING AROUND
This is a lot more fast-paced than the strategy section! Use the left
and right arrow keys to rotate your vehicle left or right. Pressing
the up arrow key will accelerate forwards. Pressing the down arrow key
will slip your vehicle into reverse gear, which is very useful for backing
away from a tough enemy while firing at the same time. To stop, release
all arrow keys. Each ship has its own inertia rating which affects how
long it takes to speed up or slow down.

  5.2b) THE KEY TO WINNING
To fire your weapon, press the CTRL key. You have unlimited ammunition,
so fire away. If your weapon has a long range, it is best to keep the
enemy far at bay by backing away and firing simultaneously. If your
enemy's weapon range is limited, it is possible to defeat your opponent
without even scratching the paint on your own ship.

6.0 CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to thank Carlos Hasan, who wrote the exceptional code for
loading and playing mod music files and sound effects, and Egerter Software
(http://www.egerter.com) for making it available. This sound library is
called DSIK (Digital Sound Interface Kit), and for thirty bucks it was
quite a deal.
All core programming was done by yours truly, and I can honestly say
that this is the hardest I have worked on a project since... well, since the
Battle of Eeid, I suppose. I can't tell you how many nights I stayed up
until four or five in the morning working on this thing, so I hope you
enjoy it.

Anyway, here's a shameless self-promotion: if you like the music in this
game, you can find many more songs written by me at my mod page:
http://www.canuck.com/~shyguy/mods.html

Or, if you want to see more of my work, you can check out some other games
that I have written by visiting my games page at:

If you wish to contact me for whatever reason, you can send me email at:

8.0 APPENDIX 1 - UNIT INFORMATION REFERENCE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I added this at the last minute as a kind of a reference thing that
you can look over if you want to. It may come in handy if you decide to play
on the harder difficulty setting.

There are eight kinds of units:

1) JEEP. The jeep is small, fast, and handles well. A skilled commander
can take out enemy tanks with a jeep. An unskilled commander should
only use his jeeps to harass and irritate his enemies. Jeeps are
	 inexpensive and therefore expendable.

	 Armor - 24 (Sabishii), 36 (Corbett), 48 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 6 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 6 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 1 (Sabishii), 1 (Corbett), 1 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 1 (Sabishii), 1 (Corbett), 1 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 5 (Sabishii), 5 (Corbett), 10 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

2) APC. The armored personnel carrier is very valuable... it can be used
to capture factories. A wise commander will keep it out of fights,
         since it isn't very powerful.

	 Armor - 36 (Sabishii), 48 (Corbett), 60 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 6 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 6 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 8 (Sabishii), 8 (Corbett), 16 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 4 (Sabishii), 4 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

3) TANK. The tank packs quite a wallop, but it is painfully slow on the
battlefield, meaning that by the time it gets to the front line, the
	 action is usually over.

	 Armor - 60 (Sabishii), 72 (Corbett), 84 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 16 (Sabishii), 10 (Corbett), 12 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 15 (Sabishii), 15 (Corbett), 30 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 6 (Sabishii), 6 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

4) STINGER. A small fast one man attack craft. Not a bad weapon, but a
bit light when it comes to armor. Perfect for taking out enemy tanks
	 and APC's, though.

	 Armor - 24 (Sabishii), 36 (Corbett), 48 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 6 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 6 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 1 (Sabishii), 1 (Corbett), 1 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 1 (Sabishii), 1 (Corbett), 1 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 5 (Sabishii), 5 (Corbett), 10 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 6 (Sabishii), 6 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

5) FAPC. The flying armored personnel carrier is pretty much the same as
the apc except for two crucial differences... this puppy can fly over
bodies of water and it can go farther per turn. Use them wisely.

	 Armor - 36 (Sabishii), 48 (Corbett), 60 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 6 (Sabishii), 4 (Corbett), 8 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 5 (Sabishii), 5 (Corbett), 5 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 8 (Sabishii), 8 (Corbett), 8 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 6 (Sabishii), 6 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

6) FALCON. This is our most proud accomplishment. This awesome weapon
is a breakthrough in scientific knowledge... it has no inertia,
meaning it handles better than a brand spanking new ferrari on
the autobahn. That, plus it is faster than speedy gonzales on
steroids and shoots faster than Arnold Schwartzenegger makes it
the best weapon on the field.

	 Armor - 64 (Sabishii), 68 (Corbett), 72 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 18 (Sabishii), 12 (Corbett), 20 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 6 (Sabishii), 6 (Corbett), 6 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 0 (Sabishii), 0 (Corbett), 0 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 0 (Sabishii), 0 (Corbett), 0 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 6 (Sabishii), 6 (Corbett), 6 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 4 (Sabishii), 4 (Corbett), 8 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 8 (Sabishii), 8 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

7) FRIGATE. A small battleship. This thing may not be as light or as fast
as a falcon, but it packs a heavy missile array and it has thicker
         armor.

	 Armor - 68 (Sabishii), 72 (Corbett), 84 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 20 (Sabishii), 16 (Corbett), 24 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 4 (Sabishii), 4 (Corbett), 4 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 10 (Sabishii), 10 (Corbett), 10 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 10 (Sabishii), 10 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

8) CRUISER. A more advanced version of the frigate. If you are looking for
tough armor, you can stop looking here. Ditto for raw firing power.
Unfortunately, this thing handles like a Yugoslavian mountain goat
who has just been shot in all four legs and hit over the head
         with a club.

	 Armor - 72 (Sabishii), 96 (Corbett),108 (Intruder)
	 Firepower- 28 (Sabishii), 24 (Corbett), 32 (Intruder)
	 Speed - 2 (Sabishii), 2 (Corbett), 2 (Intruder)
	 Turnspeed- 4 (Sabishii), 4 (Corbett), 4 (Intruder)
	 Inertia - 5 (Sabishii), 5 (Corbett), 5 (Intruder)
	 Movement - 3 (Sabishii), 3 (Corbett), 3 (Intruder)
	 Firedelay- 10 (Sabishii), 10 (Corbett), 20 (Intruder)
	 Cost - 12 (Sabishii), 12 (Corbett), ?? (Intruder)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
9.0 APPENDIX 2 - CHEATS AND STUFF
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, there are cheat codes in this game. So stop it, all you people
who write me complaining that I never put in back doors and easter eggs and
stuff!!! Okay, here they are! Of course, I'm not going to TELL you what
they are... you'll just have to find out for yourself. He he he.
Okay, one hint, when you start up the program, you can do it thusly:

Intrude /secretcode

Where "secretcode" is one of the secret codes. If you fancy yourself
a hacker, well then, you're welcome to take the program apart and try
and find them, but you'll need a lot of luck. Or skill, I suppose. Hey,
if you do find them, email me and let me know.

Here's what the different codes do:

1) gives you unlimited movement points in the strategy section
2) gives you unlimited armor in the combat section
3) lets you jump to any level
4) lets you see the ending for the allegiance of your choice
5) lets you see something that has nothing whatsoever to do with the
game but that I thought was so nifty I just figured I'd throw
it in for the heck of it since no one is ever going to see it anyway

Good luck!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
10.0 LAST MINUTE UPDATE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It appears that the save/load function is slightly buggy. I do sincerely
apologize for this, but I do have a life outside of programming and I have
spent far far far too long on this project. I may in time come back and
hunt down the bug(s), if I do, I will put an update on my home page. Until
then, you are using that function AT YOUR OWN RISK. Saving the game works
fine, he he, it's just loading it that's the problem. Uh, so don't do
it unless you're really brave or you like rebooting your system. I've coded
in a warning that will appear the first time you try to save. If you try
to save after that warning, it will work, but remember..... at your own risk.
