I. INTRODUCTION

Thank you for purchasing NATO Fighters. We hope you enjoy this
latest installment to Advanced Tactical Fighters.

All items in the ATF_114.EXE Patch are also included in NATO
Fighters.

II. CHANGES AND ADDITIONS

TECHNICAL

  - NATO Fighters works with IRQ 10.

  - NATO Fighters now natively supports the Gravis Ultrasound card.

  - NATO Fighters now supports the Matrox Millennium video card in
    800x600 resolution.

ORDNANCE

  - The weapons' performance have been improved and made
more realistic. (see the Strategies and Tactics section
    for specific information)
-- Gun accuracy for the SU-27 and MiG-29 has been
       drastically improved.
-- The AIM 120 has received a major overhaul, and
is much more effective because of it.
-- The AGM-84 SLAMS and HARPOONS cannot target
       aircraft.
-- The AEMP now has the ability to permanently
       damage your aircraft's avionics.

AIRCRAFT

  - Aircraft loadouts have been updated.

  - Aircraft art is enhanced. Landing gear has been added to
    almost all aircraft now.

  - Aircraft performance has been improved for added realism.

  - Aircraft now require more realistic takeoff time and distance.

  - The Su-35 employs thrust-vectoring on the pitch axis.

INSTRUMENTATION

  - The IR targeting has been improved to detect more objects.

MULTI-PLAY

  - Reduce Bullet Accuracy has more resolution. Check the
    Multi Menu inflight.

  - A new option is available to end a mission. "by enemy side"
can be found under the last selectable field.

PRO-MISSION CREATOR

  - An additional multi-player mission feature is "Revive @ Starting
Point". This allows the author to revive dead players at the
point of origin (ie, home airport).

OTHER GOODIES

  - You can now hit ESC to bypass the introductory movie.

  - The effects of turbulance has been lowered when flying
    close to the ground.

  - Rearming/refueling: This function can now be achieved in
flight by landing at a friendly airport (or an enemy airport
if you are an enemy) and taxiing back towards the takeoff
location of the main airstrip. You should see fuel truck
nearby. You also need to come to a complete stop and must
have depleted at least a single weapon unit and more than
300Lbs. of fuel. You cannot use this feature in the campaign.

  - Inflight/Cheat Menu: For clarification, we moved 3 items to
the bottom of the menu below a separator. These items do not
affect your ability to gain medals and promotions in the
    campaign.

III. NEW JOYSTICKS

There are some new joysticks that have come out since the release
of ATF. Below are the best ways to configure these devices with
NATO Fighters.

  - GRAVIS THUNDERBIRD
If you have one of the new Gravis Thunderbird joysticks, it
works best if set up as a CH Flightstick Pro.

  - LOGITECH WINGMAN EXTREME
If you have a Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick, it works best
if set up as a Thrustmaster FCS.

  - MICROSOFT SIDEWINDER PRO
Set the joystick in CH Flightstick Pro mode, "1 dot".

IV. STRATEGIES & TACTICS

Due to the increased weapon effectivness and enemy AI, we offer
the following tips for improving your chances of success.

The increased realism of the cannon used by the MiG-29 and Su-27
series fighters have resulted in a higher degree of difficulty
when maneveuring in close-in dogfights. It has been changed to
model the incredible accuracy of the Gsh-301, which is laser
ranged. It also models the longer range of the 30MM projectiles
which allows the enemy to hit your aircraft far earlier than you
can hit theirs during head-on cannon passes. To counter this new
threat, you might consider utilizing the following Air Combat
Maneveuring tactics.

1. Try to take out these fighters with missles first. The AIM-120
missles have been upgraded, so take advantage of them.

2. Use your wingman's missles. Consult the manual for wingman
commands.

3. If you are forced to close because you are out of missles, use
the ALT-W command to have your wingman attack all fighters.

4. Consider running if your mission allows. The enemy may run out
of fuel (be careful of your own status).

5. Lure the enemy over friendly AAA, SAM sites, or armed ships.

6. Avoid a zero degree deflection (pure head to head) pass. You
will have to force them into a turning fight. While approaching
the enemy fighters, keep them at your 10 or 2 o'clock.

7. Barrel-rolls while approaching also help avoid enemy cannon
fire.

8. Remember that Air-to-Air missles now have minimum ranges (RMin),
so slow down when approaching to increase the time available to
fire your missles. RMin for most radar-guided missles is 2 miles,
for IR missles it is just under 1/2 mile.

V. TROUBLESHOOTING

I AM NOT GETTING A SELECT PLANE SCREEN IN SINGLE MISSIONS. WHAT AM
I DOING WRONG?

You have the fly all option selected, and there are too many planes
to fit on the tarmac. However, you may change your plane by
clicking on the plane text box on the right side of the mission
 map screen.

I HAVE A GRAVIS ULTRASOUND SOUND CARD AND CHOSE THAT OPTION, BUT I
AM STILL GETTING NO SOUND. WHAT DO I DO?

1) Change to the drive and directory where your Gravis Ultrasound
files are located, by typing 'CD\ULTRASND' (or the directory
where your Ultrasound files are located).
2) Run either the ULTRAMID.EXE or the MEGAEM utility.

The ULTRAMID.EXE utility is located in the directory where the
Ultrasound files are (Default: C:\ULTRASND). This utility is
simple to use, but requires a larger amount of memory to run.
(Some users may have memory related problems, depending on their
 configurations.)

The MEGAEM utility is a bit more complex trying to set up for the
first time. When using the MEGAEM.EXE utility, the memory
requirements will be smaller, but the setup of this utility is
for the more intermediate to advanced user. This utility also
requires EMM386.EXE to be loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file. The
version of MEGAEM that you need to use is 3.10. This can be
acquired from Advanced Gravis, using their BBS, or their internet
sites, using the contact information listed below.

With the MEGAEM utility, you can get both Digital sound in the
Game, as well as MIDI music in flight. Make sure the Sound
Blaster Emulation is turned off in the MEGAEM utility setup, and one
of the MIDI emulations are selected. To get MIDI music in the game
while in flight, using MEGAEM, a 'MIDI Install' needs to be used.

3) Change to the drive and directory where NATO Fighters was
installed to. (Default: C:\JANES\ATF) You can do this by typing
'CD\JANES\ATF' (or whatever directory you installed the game to).

4) Delete the EA.CFG file from the ATF/NATO directory, by typing
 'DEL EA.CFG'.

5) Run the NATO.BAT program, and select Advanced Gravis Ultrasound
from the list of sound cards.

The Digital sound should then work fine.

If you are using the MEGAEM utility and have installed ATF
previously using the 'MIDI Install' the installation program
will prompt you for a MIDI card as well. If you wish MIDI music
during flight, then select the card emulation that you had chosen
in the setup of the MEGAEM utility, as well as the I/O port
 selected.

Users of the ULTRAMID.EXE will not be able to get MIDI in-flight
music. The above process will need to only be used once, unless
the game is reinstalled, or the card settings are changed. It is
suggested that you add the MEGAEM.EXE or ULTRAMID.EXE utility to
the AUTOEXEC.BAT on your game boot disk, or shortcut. You can do
this by using a simple text editor such as the DOS EDIT command,
or by using Windows NOTEPAD. The full path and file name will
need to be added to the line, for this to function correctly,
 such as 'C:\ULTRASND\ULTRAMID.EXE', 'C:\ULTRASND\MEGAEM.EXE' (or
the correct path to the file).

NOTE: Some users that are using the ULTRAMID.EXE driver may
experience some memory related problems, depending on the system
 configuration.

If you have questions about the MEGAEM utility itself, you will
need to contact Advanced Gravis for support. They can be reached
