~REMOTE PLAY
Hook up for a little gridiron competition
over the phone line, a direct serial connection,
or a local area network connection.

1. Select the type of Connection you want to make.
    The options for that Connection appear.
* To enter Chat Mode during a Remote game, press
   CTRL-C. When the play selections windows are up, 
   or at the pause menu click on CHAT WINDOW.
* To send a Maddenism to your opponent during a
   Remote game, press F1 through F12.

~NOTE:
   Using Instant reply during the remote game by hitting R
   Will take each player into the instant replay screen, 
   the first user to hit DONE to return to the game, must
   wait for the opponent to continue. 
   There is no dialog to inform you about your opponent, 
   as soon as both players have hit DONE the game will
   continue. 

~Direct
1. Select the appropriate COM Port and IRQ setting
   for your computer. (The default selection should 
   work for most systems). Careful that you do not choose 
   an IRQ that is in use, this will crash your system. 
   If you are not sure of your IRQ consult your hardware
   documentation. 

2. When you have made your selections, click
   CONNECT to initiate a Direct Serial Connection.

* To return to the Main menu without attempting to
   make a Connection, click CANCEL.

NOTE: If you are having difficulties or want more
      information about setting up a Direct Connection,
      see the enclosed Reference Card.

~Modem
1. Select the appropriate COM Port and IRQ setting
   for your computer. (The default selection should 
   work for most systems). Careful that you do not choose 
   an IRQ that is in use, this will crash your system. 
   If you are not sure of your IRQ consult your hardware
   documentation. 

2. Select DIAL to call another computer or ANSWER
   to receive another computer's call.

3. Click MODEM SETUP to make sure the modem
   settings are correct for your system. The Modem
   Setup screen appears (see Modem Setup Screen
   below). The generic setting should work for most 
   systems, try that option first.

4. If you are Dialing, enter the phone number of the
   computer you are attempting to connect to.

5. When you have made your selections, click
   CONNECT to initiate a Modem connection, your 
   modem will initialize, then dial. If your modem fails to
   initialize, you will receive and error, check to make 
   sure modem is connected and turned on.

* To return to the Main menu without attempting
  to make a Connection, click CANCEL.

~Modem Setup Screen

1. Click the Modem Brand box to bring up the list of
   available Modems.

2. Select your Modem from the list. If your Modem
   brand does not appear in the list, select GENERIC.

* To save your Modem Setup changes, click OK.
* To return to the Remote Play Connection screen
  without making any changes, click CANCEL.
* If necessary, edit the DIAL STRING (the default is
  'ATDT'), select your MODEM BRAND, and edit the
  MODEM INIT STRING (the default is 'AT&F').

~Network
1. Enter your Unique Game Code.
* Your Unique Game Code is a word or group of
   characters that identifies your game on the network,
   (e.g., RANGER RIC). case insensitive.

2. Both players need to enter the EXACT same code. 

3. Click CONNECT to initiate a Network Connection.

* If the error code NETWORK NOT FOUND appears, 
   please make sure you have loaded an IPX network driver
   before running the game.
* Madden NFL 97 should be able to see all players on your 
   local area network. If you can not see your partner,
   check with your network administrator.
* To return to the Main menu without attempting to make
   a Connection, click CANCEL.
