On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces invaded the Republic of Korea. Their objective was to seize the capital, Seoul, and the entire South Korean peninsula. With the help of United Nation forces, comprised mainly of U.S. troops, the South Koreans stabilized a defensive perimeter based around Pusan. The United Nations Command then decided to launch a surprise amphibious assault at Inchon, behind enemy lines, while the bulk of the North Korean Army was occupied around the Pusan perimeter.*
