At the beginning of September, the North Koreans began a powerful drive against the southern end of the Pusan perimeter that was defended by the U.S. 25th Infantry Division. One penetration was attempted against the 35th Infantry Regiment and the North Koreans actually broke into the rear of the American lines. Soon, the North Koreans were assaulting several batteries of artillery. The heaviest fighting took place within gun positions of Battery A, 64th Field Artillery Battalion. Receiving warning of the approaching North Koreans, the men of Battery A had to quickly dig in. Fortunately for the Americans, they had in their possession several half-tracks armed with quad 50 caliber machine-guns.
