In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support a puppet government under Babrak Karmal. Some 100,000 Soviet troops were sent, and soon were fighting against the Afghan resistance. However, unlike the open terrain of Europe, the mountains of Afghanistan provided plenty of cover for the rebels. In time, the Soviet troops found themselves in a situation similar to the one the Americans had in Vietnam. A heavily escorted Soviet convoy tried to make its way up the Savang Highway, when it was ambushed by the Mujahadeen rebels.
