                            Installing and Running
                           the ImagiNation Network
                                in Windows 95

          --Remember!
The ImagiNation Network software requires MS-DOS and does not
support or recommend using another operating system such as
          Windows 95.
Although the ImagiNation Network may work just fine under
Windows 95, we have not thoroughly tested it. If you have any
problems using the ImagiNation Network under Windows 95, you
may get the best information if you contact Microsoft
directly. However, you can use these instructions to attempt
to access the ImagiNation Network using Windows 95.
Keep in mind that these instructions may not work for
everyone. When in doubt, use DOS to get online in the
          ImagiNation Network.

          --System Requirements
In addition to the minimum system requirements for Windows 95,
we recommend a minimum of 8 MB of RAM. You must also have a
minimum of 585K of free conventional memory in your DOS
          session.

          --Installing the ImagiNation Network Software
          Installing from CD-ROM
The ImagiNation 2.4 CD supports Windows 95's Autoplay feature.
Simply insert your CD-ROM into your drive and wait a few
seconds for the installation program to start. If after a
short time the installation program does not start, follow the
          instructions for diskette installation.

          Installing from diskette
Although it would probably be easier to execute ImagiNation's
install utility from a DOS prompt, it is possible to use the
          Windows 95 RUN command.

          The RUN Command
Click the Start Button on the Status Bar or press [Ctrl-Esc].
Click on RUN or press [R].
Type in the path and filename of the ImagiNation installation
          program, then Click OK.
As with Windows 3.1, you can also use a Browse function,
however, it'll probably be easier to type the information
          directly into the field.

                For Example:
If installing from a diskette in the A drive, you would
          type:
                A:\INSTALL

If installing from a CD in the D drive, you would type:
                D:\INSTALL

          --Running the ImagiNation Network Software
The ImagiNation Network works best under Windows 95 when run
in full-screen mode. Many problems can be prevented by making
sure that the ImagiNation Network Software is run in full-
screen mode. We recommend that you run the INN.PIF file
included with the ImagiNation Network Software to launch
          ImagiNation in full-screen mode.

--Setting up a Desktop Icon for ImagiNation
The easiest way to run ImagiNation from Windows 95 is from a
"Shortcut" icon on the Windows 95 Desktop. The next steps
explain how to create and modify a Shortcut for ImagiNation.

          --Creating the ImagiNation Shortcut
          1. Point the mouse to the wallpaper and click the right
          mouse button.
          2. Point to NEW or press [W].
          3. Click on SHORTCUT or press [S].
          4. Enter the path and filename in the Command Line field and
          click the NEXT button.

                For Example:
If you installed ImagiNation onto your C: drive, and
into the "INN" directory, you would type:
                C:\INN\INN.PIF

          5. Click the FINISH button to accept the name "ImagiNation."
          6. Now your ImagiNation shortcut with the default MS-DOS icon
will appear on the Windows 95 Desktop.

          --Changing the Icon
          1. Right-click on the new MS-DOS/ImagiNation icon.
          2. Click on PROPERTIES.
          3. At the top of the "Properties" dialog box, click on
          PROGRAM.
          4. Click on CHANGE ICON or press [Alt-C].
          5. Type in the path and filename of INN.ICO and click OK.

                For Example:
If you installed ImagiNation onto your C: drive, and
into the "INN" directory, you would type:
                C:\INN\INN.ICO

          6. With the ImagiNation icon as the current icon, click OK.
          7. Click OK at the bottom of the "Properties" dialog box.
          8. You now have an ImagiNation icon for your ImagiNation
          shortcut.

          --Running ImagiNation from its icon
Double-click on the ImagiNation shortcut you just created to
          launch the ImagiNation Network Software.

          --Memory Issues
Memory issues are likely to be the most common problem when
running ImagiNation under Windows 95. If you receive an
insufficient memory warning message during the installation of
the ImagiNation Network Software, we recommend creating a
boot disk in a DOS session. To open a DOS session:

          1. Click the Start Button on the Status Bar or press
          [Ctrl-Esc].
          2. Click on PROGRAMS or press [P].
          3. On the second menu, click on MS-DOS Prompt.

Instructions for creating a boot disk are included in the
READ.ME file in your ImagiNation directory.

          --Finding the Modem's COM Port
With ImagiNation Network software Version 2.4, the
installation routine may not properly detect the COM ports if
it is running in Windows. This will cause the installation
program to report, "Your system does not appear to support
this choice," regardless of which COM port is selected for
your modem. This should not affect ImagiNation's ability to
use the modem, provided that the correct COM port is selected.

          --Known Problems, Causes and Solutions

ImagiNation Install does not detect COM ports or sound card
          properly.

Problem: The ImagiNation Install does not detect your com
port or sound card, and prompts you to verify that you want to
select that COM port or sound card because it didn't detect
the setting you are asking for.
Cause: The install program does not wait long enough for
the Windows 95 DOS box to return the information it needs
about the COM ports and sound card.
Solution(s): If you exit install and run it again in the
same DOS box, it will detect the proper ports and cards. The
best solution, however, is go to MS-DOS mode when running the
          installation.

ImagiNation Install and certain video cards send shut off
          monitor when switching video modes.

Problem: When running the ImagiNation Install with
certain video cards (such as an ATI Mach64), the installation
program causes the monitor to go into power saving mode when
          the video mode switches.
               Cause: Unknown.
Solution(s): Install from DOS. If running in a window,
switch between a window and full screen and back and the
          monitor should come back on.

Switching tasks using keyboard while dialing interrupts
          dialing sequence.

Problem: The ImagiNation dialing process detects any
keystrokes inside of ImagiNation and interrupts the dialing
          sequence.
Cause: Although it might be tempting to switch to another
task or to minimize the ImagiNation window, using the keyboard
to do this causes the dialing sequence to be interrupted and
the member is prompted to continue or quit.
Solution(s): Run ImagiNation in full screen mode. Don't
touch anything while dialing is in progress. It is best to
let ImagiNation have the full attention of Windows 95 while
          establishing a connection.

Red Baron and Football Online will not run in a window under
          Windows 95.

Problem: Because of the graphics and the online realtime
nature of these games, they will lock up if run in a window
          under Windows 95.
Cause: Conflicts with the way the programs display
          graphics to the screen.
Solution: Run ImagiNation in full screen mode. This
          eliminates this problem.

ImagiNation flashes a black screen when changing lands or
          chaining to some games.

Problem: The screen flashes black and then returns to
normal when changing lands or chaining to games such as Red
          Baron or ImagiNation Golf.
Cause: Changing video card modes on some video cards.
Appears to be video card specific.
Solution(s): Try running in full screen. No other
          solution is know for this.

Sounds cause the screen to flash black when playing.

Problem: When some sounds are played on certain sound
cards, the screen will flash black.
Cause: Probably caused by a DOS TSR loaded by the sound
card. This has been noted to happen with an Ensoniq sound
          card.
Solution(s): Update the sound card or remove the driver.
Or turn your sound off in the Preferences menu.

Windows 95 passes multiple key events to the ImagiNation
          application.

Problem: For some people, immediately after they enter
their password and hit ENTER, they are asked if they wish to
"Continue" or "Quit" because an extra key stroke has been
passed to the application and interrupted the dialing
          sequence.
Cause: Apparently, Windows 95 is passing the key event
twice, or the application is handling it twice.
Solution: Choose "Continue" to reinitialize the dialing
          process

Connection lost when ImagiNation is minimized or run in a
          window and a chat arrives.

Problem: It is possible that you may lose connection to
the ImagiNation Network if you receive a chat, or similar
message, while the ImagiNation Network Software is running
in the background or minimized under Windows 95.
Cause: It is speculated that even with the Idle property
set to its lowest setting, a modal dialog such as a chat
appearing in the ImagiNation program in conjunction with the
ImagiNation window being minimized or out of focus causes the
ImagiNation executive to not be able to maintain the level of
communication it needs to remain connected.
Solution: Run the ImagiNation Network full-screen. This
          virtually eliminates this problem.

Palette problems when ImagiNation changes screens when it runs
          in a window.

Problem: When the ImagiNation Network is run in a window
and the ImagiNation program makes a transition from one screen
to another, there are notable problems with the palette.
Cause: Windows cannot detect the palette change inside
the ImagiNation application, and displays the new screen using
          the old palette.
Solution: Run ImagiNation in full-screen mode. This
          eliminates this problem.

Scroll arrows overreact to mouse clicks in Yserbius and
          Twinion.

Problem: When clicking on arrows to scroll up and down
through your list of items you can sell or buy, the selection
bar may jump several items instead of just one.
               Cause: Unknown.
Solution(s): Try using the keyboard, or just keep moving
the selection bar with it with the mouse and hope you can pin
it down on the item you wish to buy or sell.

Alert messages that pop up on top may minimize your full
          screen ImagiNation Network.

Problem: A network message or alarm from a scheduler may
minimize your full screen ImagiNation session and minimize it.
It will then be subject to disconnects in conjunction with the
appearance of modal dialogs such as chats. This is described
          in another problem description.
Cause: An application that displays a "always on top"
          notification message.
Solution: Disable all such applications before running
          ImagiNation full screen.

Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Remote Network Access Server
          doesn't free modem.

Problem: If the Dial-Up Networking Remote Access Server
is monitoring the line for calls, it will not allow
          ImagiNation to dial out.
Cause: The Remote Network Access Server is monitoring
calls and will not release the modem to other applications.
Solution: Switch the property of the Remote Network
Access Server from "Allow Calls" to "No Calls". This will
allow the modem to be used for other applications that need
          it.
