CD-ROM INSTALLATION

To run AMBUSH, log onto your CD-ROM drive and type 'AMBUSH' R.
If, at a later date, you wish to change your sound card setup
type 'SETD' R.

To create a boot disc for AMBUSH CD-Rom

If you are unable to run AMBUSH CD-ROM due to 'insufficient
memory', you will need to create a Boot Disc. Insert a blank
disc to be formatted into drive A & type 'Format A:/S' R at the
C: prompt. This will create a system disc. Having made a system
disc create a config.sys file & an Autoexec.bat file refering to
the suggestions below, using the Ms Dos EDIT command.

CONFIG.SYS

INTRODUCTION

Ambush at Sorinor places you in charge as a mercenary Commander
of a diverse group of characters and creatures. There are six
clans, the Rokan, Ylatrius, Sernevan, Grlzx, Twillin, and Drokal
clans. Play the game as a single mission or a campaign. An
editor allows you to invent your own fantasy missions.

Once you have selected a clan and accept a mission, the game
begins. First buy your troops (if you are the Ambusher player,
you may buy traps) and place them on the map. The game starts in
'pause' mode. If you are the Ambusher, you must seek out the
enemy VIPs and kill or block them from exiting the map. The Ward
forces come off the blue entry squares. If you are the Ward
player, you need to safely escort the VIPs off the map through
the green exit squares. The mission is over when either all
friendly units exit the map, are killed, or the time limit
expires. The campaign ends when you run out of money, there are
no missions left, or the clans are angry and refuse to offer you
a mission.

TUTORIALS

To select a menu item, click the left mouse button or press e.
To scroll the map use the right mouse button or the arrow keys.
Select the 'PLAY MISSION' option and choose 'TUTORIAL'. The clan
picture of Rokan appears with the mission briefing. The mission
information shows that your mission is 'Ward 70%', this means
you must escort 70% or more of the VIPs off the map. Next is
'price: 220', which means you will be paid 220 coins if you
complete your mission. If you fail, all you receive is the down
payment, which in this case is 44 coins. 'Time: 40', means you
have 40 hours to complete your mission. Select 'Accept' to play
the mission.

Click the left mouse to see the map displayed in the Area View.
Place the cursor on the top right map edge and hold down the
right button scrolling the map until it stops. Click on the
'Zoom' icon and place the magnifying glass near the blue squares
on the lower right edge and click. You are now in the Local
View. Click on the 'Help' icon and place the question mark on
the top blue square and click. A window appears informing you
that the terrain is weeds. The group is composed of Goblin
Slaves and its current orders are "Go to location." Click to
clear the window then again over the group. The grey squares
from the group and heading to the northwest represent the path
the unit will take.

Click on the 'Buy' icon. The only group to buy is the Lightning
Wizard which is in the blue (Ward group). The price of 18 coins
per character is displayed by the Wizard's icon. To see the
other statistics click on the other options: COUNT (number of
Wizards bought), SPEED (how fast the group travels), ATK (the
character's attack rating), and DEF (the defence rating). At the
bottom of the window are two numbers. The first is how many
coins you started with, the second is how much is left. You
should have 10000 coins to start with and still have 220 for the
mission. Click on the '+' in the '- 5 +' button box. Next click
'Buy 5'. The map appears allowing you to deploy the group. Click
beneath the Goblin Slaves and the group should appear. Click on
the 'Buy' icon then 'Count'. The screen should show 5 Lightning
Wizards. The bottom number shows 130 because you spent 90 coins
to buy 5 Wizards. Click the q button.

Click on 'Zoom' to display the Strategic view. Your Slaves and
Wizards are located on the right edge at the top of the blue
squares. Give your groups orders to move toward the exit area.
Place the magnifying glass near your troops and click. The Area
View is displayed. The Lightning Wizard group, highlighted
yellow, is the active group to give orders to. Click on the 'Go'
icon (G). Move the 'Go' cursor to the bottom middle of the map
and scroll until you reach the green Ward Exit squares, then
click on a square. You have just told the Wizards to move to the
exit area as shown by the grey path squares. Click the 'Report'
icon (2), then select 'Group Report'. Highlight the Goblin
Slaves and click. Click on 'Zoom'. Place the cursor near your
troops and click, then click the 'Go' icon. Again move to the
green exit area and select a green square to move to.

Click on the 'End Placement' icon (1) and answer "yes" to "Done
buying troops?" Click on the 'Pause' icon (P). Your mission is
now under-way. Click 'Pause' again to stop the execution. Click
on 'Zoom' then click on your units. You are now in the Area
View. Click on 'Pause' to continue. When you see red ambusher
groups approaching, pause the game. Click on 'Zoom' then on your
units. Next click on the Goblin Slaves to highlight them. Click
the 'Stop' icon (S) to stop your slaves until you give them
orders. Let your Wizards do the fighting. If they cause enough
damage the enemy will retreat. The 'Exit' icon (X), forces all
your troops to head for the closest entry/exit area. Remember
you need to exit 14 of the 20 slaves to be successful.

The CUSTOM MISSION TUTORIAL explains the process of creating
your own mission. Select the 'Other' option. Next select 'Edit
Mission' to display the Custom Mission Screen. Click on the
'System' icon (1). Next select 'Mission Menu' then 'New
Mission'. Answer "Yes" to "Clear memory?" Next select the
mapfile called '1SWAMP'. The character list will then be
displayed. Select Dwarf Ambassador and Dwarf Elite from the list
of characters. Click q, you should now see a mostly green map on
the screen with a large blue swamp. Click on the 'Zoom' icon.
Place the cursor in the top left corner of the screen and click
the left button. The map was in the Area View; now you are in
the Local View. Click on the 'Ward Entry' icon (1). The cursor
should change to an 'IN' cursor. Place the cursor in the corner
square and hold the left button down while moving the mouse to
the right along the top map edge about ten squares. Release the
button. You should see ten blue squares which represent the
squares in which the Ward player's groups will come onto the
map.

Click on the 'Zoom' icon to display the Strategic View. Now
click on q then again on 'Zoom'. Move to the top right hand
corner of the map and click to see the Area View. Repeat this
process to display the Local View. Next click on the 'Ward Exit'
icon (2). From the top right of the map, hold the left mouse
button down and move along the right map edge five squares.
There should now be five green Ward Exit squares which the ward
forces must use to exit. Now click on the 'Delete Entry/Exit'
icon. Click the new cursor in the top right hand corner square.
You have just deleted the green exit square.

To identify the terrain in a square, click on the 'Help' icon.
Then click the question mark on the large green circular object.
Click to clear the window. Click on the 'System' icon and select
'Mission Menu'. Next choose 'Edit Mission'. Click on the 'Kill'
box. Your forces will be the ambusher forces and the computer
forces will be the ward forces. The Kill% is set at 0% so click
on the highlighted box until Kill% is 30%. You have to kill 30%
of the VIP ward forces to be successful. Click on the next box
and set the number of mission hours to 20. You have 20 hours to
complete your mission. The next box sets the payment to 70
coins, your payment if you complete your mission successfully.
Set the next box to 10 coins, the down payment you will receive
now. The two boxes in the left hand corner represent the six
clans. Set the top box (with the 'For' to the left), to the
fifth clan by clicking the '5' box. Set the bottom box (with the
'Vs' to the left), to the second clan by clicking the '2' box.
You will now be working for clan 5 and fighting against clan 2.
Next set the attitude of clan 5 which are the top two boxes
under Attitude. Set the first box to +3; the second box to -2.
Set the clan 2's attitude levels to -5 in the third box and -3
in the fourth box. These are the attitude changes of the two
clans towards you. Now click on Esc.

Click on the 'Buy' button (B). A new screen displays Dwarf
Ambassador and the Dwarf Elite. Move the highlight position
underneath the last name and click on 'New'. Click the 'More'
button twice at the bottom of the list. New character types and
their price should be displayed. Select Human Archer. Click the
'Count' icon. This is the number of characters that can be in
the mission. Next click on the 'Speed', 'ATK', and 'DEF' icons
to see values for speed, attack strength, and defence strength.
With the Human Archer highlighted click 'Team' once. The colour
of the printing of 'Human Archer' changed from grey to red. Four
possible colours can appear. Grey - the character has not yet
been selected. Red - the character belongs to the ambusher.
Green - a VIP for the ward player. Blue - the character belongs
to the ward player. Next move the highlight to the Dwarf Elite,
then click on 'Team' twice. It should be blue. Move the cursor
to the Dwarf Ambassador and click three times. It should turn
green. Click on the '+' in the '- 10 +' icon. Next click the
'VIP 10' icon. The map comes up allowing you to deploy the VIP
group. Move the cursor to the upper left hand corner and click
left to deploy the 10 Dwarf Ambassadors. Click on 'Buy' and
highlight the 'Dwarf Elite'. Click the '+' twice to give you 20
Elites. Click 'GET 20' and place the group six squares to the
left of the Ambassadors.

Click on the 'System' icon, choose 'Mission Menu' then select
'Edit Briefing'. Type in the mission briefing such as "Your
mission is to kill 30% of the Dwarven Ambassadors who are
escorted by a force of Dwarf Elites." Click on Esc, then on the
'System' icon and select 'Mission Menu', then 'Save Mission'.
Press Enter to select the default filename or enter your own.
Select the 'System' icon again, and choose 'Quit Editor'. You
have now successfully completed a mission using the editor.

THE INTERFACE

Use the 'Zoom' icon to view the map in three different modes.
The Strategic View displays the entire map, the Area View
displays a more detailed map with each unit shown, and the Local
View has a very detailed map with individual character icons
shown. Choose menu selections by placing the mouse cursor over
the word and clicking the left mouse button. The first letter of
the word in the menu is the searchkey. Pressing a letter of a
menu word will highlight the next word starting with that
letter. Pressing Enter or Spacebar selects the option chosen.
The Esc key exits most menus. Keyboard equivalent Hot keys for
the Command Icons are displayed on the Icon itself.

To select a specific group click the cursor over one of the
characters in the group. Clicking on a different group will
deactivate the prior group. You can give the group orders such
as to split into two separate groups, merge two groups, move to
a new location, hunt down an enemy group, etc. Orders can be
given by clicking on the Command Icon of the desired order. Some
orders require you to also select the group to 'Follow' or
location on the map to 'Go' to.

THE MAIN MENU

A New Campaign is a series of missions linked together, with you
as the commander of your mercenary forces. You can set the
Payment Rating anywhere from 50 to 150 and the Attitude Rating
from 0 to 100. The Payment Rating is the beginning payments
offered by the clans. The Attitude rating is their attitude
towards you. Next type in your campaign filename. You will start
with 500 coins in the bank. Continue Campaign allows you to
select from your previous saved games. Delete Campaign deletes a
campaign game.

Play Mission allows you to play a stand alone mission. The
filename tells you the following: the first character is the
clan number (1-6), the second is a reference letter, the third
is 'K' for Kill (Ambusher) or 'W' for Ward, your opponents, and
the last represents the payment for the mission.

Select one of the Clan's missions by clicking on a picture of
one of the six leaders. The payment for the mission is shown at
the bottom of the picture. Their facial expressions will give
you an indication of the Clan's attitude. The clan's leader will
appear in the upper left corner of the Mission Screen, with the
clan name and attitude rating underneath. The left side of the
scale means the clan are very angry with you, the right side
means they are pleased. You will also see information on your
mission (Kill or Ward and the percentage of the VIPs you must
either kill or exit off the map). Next is your mission payment
amount, down payment, and number of hours to complete your
mission.

THE COMMAND ICONS

Once you have accepted a mission, a map will be displayed of the
battlefield area. On the map edges you will see blue squares on
which the ward player's forces and VIPs will enter the map.
There will also be green squares on which the ward player's
forces must exit the map. The ambusher forces must try to
prevent the ward player's forces from reaching the exit
squares. They can do this by blocking the ward unit's path,
setting traps and ambushes, and eliminating the enemy units. On
the Play Screen the Command Icons are displayed on the left. The
general use icons are usually in the right column and the unit
order icons are on the left. If you are not sure what the icon
does, activate the 'Help' (?) icon. You must first buy your

COMBAT

Units have a Weapon which is rated from 1 to 9. They also have
Armour which is rated 0 to 7. There are two types of troops,
melee (hand-to-hand) combat troops and missile combat troops.
Melee troops can only fight when adjacent to an enemy unit.
Missile troops can fire their spears, arrows, fireballs, etc. up
to 10 squares away. Units may hide themselves when in areas of
cover. To do this they must be stopped and away from enemy
units. The unit who is attacking has its Attack Value determined
at random. The defender also has its Defence Value determined at
random. If the random Attack Value is greater than the random
Defence Value, then the defender has been hit. If a hit has
resulted, then the attacker has its Weapon Value calculated at
random and the defender also has its Armour Value calculated.
Whenever a unit reaches zero points, it is dead.

TRAPS

The Ambusher player must place traps before he is finished
buying his troops. The unit triggering a trap will automatically
die. Traps cannot be placed on bridges.

Trap Price Description

STRATEGY/DIPLOMACY

Try to keep the Clans as pleased with you as possible so they
will offer you more money. You might want to perform a mission
for very little money to win the Clan's favour. Your strategy
and tactics may be largely dependent on the type of forces
involved. If the enemy has very strong troops, you may wish to
spend more money than your mission will give you to allow you to
be successful. Missile troops give you ranged combat at a
distance that can help weaken the enemy forces. You may wish to
retreat at times to keep out of reach of enemy melee troops.

Match up your strong forces against his strong forces. Depending
upon the situation, destroying his weaker troops first allows
you to concentrate your troops against his more powerful troops.
Use terrain to your advantage. You can hold a narrow path with
just a few troops maybe even placing a few traps to help channel
his forces into a smaller area. Outflanking and surrounding
enemy forces is always a good tactic. Divide up your larger
groups into smaller ones and send some on a flanking manoeuvre.
Keeping a reserve force of fresh troops behind the line can be
used to either exploit a widening gap in the enemy lines and
pursue his retreating forces or to plug a gap in your own lines.
Use the Strategic View so you can tell when the ambushers become
visible. Use the Area View to perform wide flanking manoeuvres
and when no contact has been made. The Local View is critical
when both forces are engaged. Using the 'Histogram' option gives
an idea of the health status of both sides' troops. Use the
'Pause' option frequently to rearrange your forces and give new
orders. If some of your troops have low health ratings, retreat
them, replacing them with fresher troops. If some of the enemy
troops are getting low in health, concentrate your attacks on
them. Units that are in an area of cover and remain still will
automatically hide. This is useful for hiding noncombatant VIPs
and hoping enemy troops will pass by. The price you have to pay
for each character is dependent upon which clan is hiring you.
Hero types usually charge quite a bit to all the clans for their
services. Magic troops are normally very expensive to buy.

CUSTOM MISSION SCREEN

To use the Custom Mission Editor, Select 'Edit Mission'. You

TROUBLESHOOTING

Ambush requires XMS extended memory for playing digitized sound
effects. XMS memory requires the HIMEM.SYS driver from DOS or
Windows or another upper-memory manager like QEMM to be active.
To test for sound card compatibility problems, choose
RECONFIGURE from the Main Menu and select one of the PC SPEAKER
options. Use DOS MEM or CHKDSK commands to check 'largest
executable program size' for the amount of memory free before
game play. You may have to edit your CONFIG.SYS and/or
AUTOEXEC.BAT files or create a BOOT DISK to free up enough
memory.
