Introduction
Welcome to Big Red Racing - a racing game with a difference. For a start, you’ll find no tediously flat tarmac tracks here. Oh no. Instead, prepare yourself for six completely new types of circuit: Dirt Track, Water, Snow, Sci-Fi, Quarry and City. And that’s not all. There are also 12 different vehicles to try out: two for each type of circuit. Some of them you may recognise, some you won’t (because we’ve made them up) and many you’d probably never imagine in a racing game. You’ll find out as you go along that all these vehicles handle differently and that some are better at certain tracks than others.

How To Play Big Red Racing: The Basics
There are three ways of playing Big Red Racing:
• Single Player - Tournament
• Single Player - Single Race
• Multi-Player (this option includes Network, Modem and Split-screen)
Single Player-Tournament
In the single player tournament game there are up to 18 races to compete in, divided into 5 rounds of increasing difficulty. The object is to progress through the rounds until you reach the Final. If you win that, you will become the Big Red Racing champion! The diagram below tells you exactly how many races you have to win in each round before you can get on to the next.
Round Qualifying 2 3 4 Final
No. of Races Available 3 3 4 4 4
Races You Have to Win 1 1 2 2 2
As you can see, in the first two rounds, you don’t have to succeed, or even compete, in every race to get through to the next stage. For example, in the third round, you only have to win two out of the four races on offer. If you win the first two races that you attempt, you will go straight through to round two. If you lose the first two races you attempt, all is not lost - as long as you win the next two you can still go through to the next stage. Simple, eh?
If that wasn’t enough help to get you going, you will also be allowed to finish second in the first two stages, and still carry on with the game. From round three onwards, though, you have to finish in first place or you’ve lost the race. So there.
Unfortunately, if you fail to successfully complete enough races in any of the rounds, that’s the end of the game and you will have to restart in the qualifying round again. Double so there.
Single Player-Single Race
This is the option for the Motor-Sports fan in a rush or the novice who wants a bit of a practice before attempting the entire game. You can pick any circuit from the first two rounds and, when you’ve finished it, you’ll be returned to the ‘Game Options Screen’.
Multi-Player
The two player and multi-player modes work quite differently from the single player game. Firstly, there will be no computer controlled vehicles - all the vehicles in each race will be controlled by the players involved. Secondly, you do not have to go through the rounds in order, like you do in the single player tournament. With the Multi-Player option, you simply select 1 to 5 circuits to race on from the complete list of 18.
The aim of the multi-player game is, of course, to beat all your friends and make them look silly and inferior. At the end of every race, each player gets a score according to his/her finishing position. The points are dispersed like this:
1st place 10 points
2nd place 08 points
3rd place 06 points
4th place 04 points
5th place 02 points
6th place 00 points
The scores are displayed in the form of a league table which appears after each circuit has been completed. The final scores will be brought up after the last race.
Getting Started: A step by step guide
The following is a guide to all the screens you will see before you actually start racing. Some option screens have a BACK icon in the top left hand corner. If you click on this, you’ll go back to the previous screen.
The Player Options Screen
This is where you decide how many people are playing and act accordingly. If it’s just you against the computer, click on either the single player tournament option or the single player, single race option and go to the ‘Game Option Screen’ section of the manual. If you’re playing against a chum, or a group of chums, click on the multi-player option and read on.
The Multi-Player Option Screen
There are three multi-player choices: Split-screen (this is for two players on one PC), Network or Modem. Just choose whichever you want. You will then go on to the game options screen. For more information about these choices, see the installation and configuration sheet.
The Game Option Screen
From the ‘Game Option Screen’ you get to mess around with lots of different aspects of the game. As you can see the choices are: Sound Set-Up, Choose Character, Choose Logo, Define Keys and OK. If you don’t want to change anything, just click on OK and you’ll go straight on to the ‘Race Selection Screen’. If you do, click on one of the first three options and you’ll go onto the relevant screen.
Sound Set-Up
When you click on ‘Sound Set-Up’ you’ll see this screen.
During the game there are three sound sources. These are represented on the set-up screen like so:
CD In-game music.
FX Sound Effects (Engine noises,
crashes, skids, that sort of thing).
Commentary In-game commentary.
If you look at the screen shot, you will see that CD and FX both have a bar next to them. On each bar is a pointer which shows the volume that the sound source is currently on: 0 = lowest volume,
7 = highest volume. At either side of each bar is a Plus sign and a Minus sign. Clicking on the Minus sign lowers the volume and clicking on the Plus sign increases the volume. You can also click on the bar either side of the pointer to change the volume.
At the bottom of the screen you’ll see the word COMMENTARY with a box next to it. When you first enter the screen, the box will contain a tick which means that the in-game commentary is switched on. If you don’t want any in-game commentary, click on the box and the tick will become a cross. The volume of the commentary is controlled by the FX bar, so, how ever loud you’ve got the FX, the commentary will be the same. When you’ve finished altering the sound levels click on OK and you’ll be returned to the ‘Game Options Screen’.
Select Character
This is where you get to choose a character to ‘drive’ all your vehicles in the game you are about to start. When you click on ‘Select Character’, this exciting selection screen will appear:
Key
a) Character The character currently selected.
b) Character Data Background information on the character currently selected.
c) ‘Colour’ icon Click on this to select a colour for the driver’s uniform. To cycle through all
the available colours, just keep clicking on ‘colour’. The colour you choose
here will also be the colour of all the vehicles you drive in the game.
d) ‘Person’ icon Click on this to cycle through the various characters. There are six to
choose from.
When you’ve had a look through all of the available characters and colours, make sure the ones that you want are on the screen and then click on OK. This will return you to the ‘Game Options’ screen. Now, when you start the game, you will see your chosen character in the driving seat of your vehicle. If you’ve chosen the split-screen option, you and your fellow player will take it in turns to choose your characters.
Select Logo
This is where you get to choose a logo which will then be emblazoned on every vehicle you drive in the game. The ‘Select Logo’ screen looks uncannily similar to this:
Key
a)
Currently selected logo.b) A vehicle displaying the currently selected logo.
To cycle through the logos available simply click on the arrows either side of currently selected logo. When you have decided which one you like best, make sure it is displayed and then click on OK. This will return you to the game options screen.
Again, if you’ve chosen the split-screen option, you and your chum will take it in turns to make a selection.
Choosing a Race:The ‘Race Selection Screen’
The race selection screen is where you get to browse through the tracks available and then select one (or between one and five if you’ve chosen the multi-player option) to attempt or examine in detail. Because there are three different ways of playing Big Red Racing, there are three slightly different versions of the screen. Whichever way you’re playing the game, it might be a good idea to read the following section first, because it has all the basic information about how to use the screen. When you’ve done that, go to the section relevant to you.
Single Player-Tournament Version
First of all, here’s a little picture of the Race Selection Screen so that you recognise it when it pops up on your monitor.
Click on the left and right arrows to cycle through the available circuits. Click on the Select button if you wish to race there.
Once you’ve finally made up your mind (and have recovered from the initial excitement of watching the globe moving to-and-fro whenever you click on a different location), highlight the track you want and then click on OK and you will, without any further ado, be taken to the ‘Circuit Intro Screen’ . You will be returned to the race selection screen every time you complete a race (unless you lose the game or complete round five).
Note: After you’ve attempted a track, whether you win or lose, the track’s icon on the Race Selection screen will be disabled so that you cannot go back and attempt it again (until you begin a new game). You absolutely must attempt a different circuit.
Single Player-Single Race Version
This screen looks almost identical to the tournament version, except for one tiny difference. As you will see, there is still a list of locations in the top right hand corner of the screen (for those of you who didn’t read the section above, these locations are, of course, the locations of the Big Red Racing circuits). However, there are now arrow icons at the side of the locations. You can click on the arrow icons to cycle through the available circuits. If you click on any of the circuit locations themselves, the globe will spin like a spinning thing to graphically reveal your chosen circuit’s exact position. If you decide that you want to look at a different circuit, simply click on one of the other locations and it will be highlighted instead.
When you’ve decided on a circuit to attempt, click on the relevant location, watch the globe spin round and then click on OK. You will then come face to face with the ‘Circuit Intro Screen’.
Multi-Player Version
Again, this one looks similar to the single player tournament version except here you get to choose all your circuits on one screen. To cycle through all eighteen of the circuits, just click on the arrow icons at the sides. When the desired location is displayed click SELECT to add it to the list of circuits. You will now race through your chosen circuits. If you place a location in one of the boxes and then decide you don’t want to race there after all, just click on the relevant box and it will be empty again.
Once you have selected a circuit from the top, it does not disappear from the circuit menu. This means that you can race up to five times on the same circuit if you want to (just click on the location at the top, click on a box at the bottom and then repeat).
Before you do any of this though, have a chat with your friend(s) to decide which circuits you want to compete on and how long you want your tournament to be (remember you can choose between 1 and 5 circuits). When you’ve done that, you’re ready to use the screen.
Circuit Info Screen
The circuit info screen allows you to investigate the circuit you have just selected and to choose a vehicle in which to race. The options are described in detail in the following sections.
Key
a) View Click on this if you want to watch
a preview of the track before you
attempt it.
b) Vehicle Click on this to enter the ‘Vehicle
Selection Screen’.
c) Race Click on this to begin the race.
Vehicle selection screen
Each vehicle has its pros and cons: some are exceptionally fast, but difficult to manoeuvre; some are slower but very stable. Choosing the vehicle you want to drive just couldn’t be easier! .
The vehicle spinning around in the middle of the screen is the one currently selected for you to race in. To look at the other option, just click on the NEXT icon and the alternative will be displayed. The appendix at the end of this manual contains more information about all of the vehicles, so it may be a good idea to consult that before making your decision. When you’ve decided on a vehicle, click on the OK icon and you will be returned to the ‘Circuit Info Screen’. Your chosen vehicle will now be the one spinning above the Vehicle icon. If you suddenly think "On no, what a terrible mistake, I don’t want that one at all", don’t panic! Just go back to the choose vehicle screen and choose again.
Game Screen

When you’re in the game, and using an external camera view (see ‘Controls’ section below), your screen display will look like this...
Key
1) Your current position in the race.
2) Nitro Boost canisters you have remaining.
3) Revs per minute.
4) Miles per hour.
5) Your vehicle.
If you’ve selected the two player option, the screen will be split into two sections. Player One will be at the top, player two at the bottom.
Beginning A Race
When you begin a race, you will see your own vehicle at the starting line amongst the vehicles of your opponents.
The start line ‘traffic light’ will change from red to green and you’re off!
While you are racing, you have to follow the track as closely as possible - the computer can detect when you leave it, so don’t be tempted to try any short-cuts. That would be very naughty indeed.
Each time you complete a lap, a display will tell you how many you have completed and how many there are remaining.
Nitro Boosters
All vehicles in Big Red Racing are equipped with nitro boosters. When triggered, these ingenious contraptions provide an incredible boost of speed for a limited period of time. There are two different kinds of nitro booster: Nitro Injectors and Nitro Canisters. Some vehicles are equipped with one type, some with the other. Let’s have a look at them...
Nitro Injectors
With Nitro-Injectors, you can control the release of Nitrous chemicals into your vehicle’s engine. Simply keep the button that activates the nitro boost depressed until you no longer need the extra speed. While you have the button pressed, the nitro energy level will deplete.
Nitro Canisters
When a nitro canister is triggered, it releases its entire contents in one burst (stop laughing). This makes the canister slightly more dangerous to use than the injector.
At the beginning of every race, your vehicle’s nitro level is re-filled. However, the amount of nitro fuel you get at the start of the race depends on the circuit type you are currently racing on. For example, if you’re competing on a snow circuit, you’ll only get two nitro canisters at the beginning of the race. If you’re about to start a dirt circuit, you’ll get four.
